:)I ordered my first pocket knives today to start my collecting. I had a $50 gift card from Amazon so I purchased the following Rough Riders: Congress Whittler w/ Brown Jigged Bone Handles, Deluxe Barlow w/ Brown Jigged Bone Handles, Stockman w/ Red Jigged Bone Handles, Saddlehorn w/ Brown Jigged Bone Handles, Copperhead w/ Stag Bone Handle, and a Trapper w/ Stag Bone Handle. All the brown jigged bone handles are actually slightly different colors. I did as many suggested and ordered different patterns to see what I liked best. The total for these 6 knives was $70.40 so they only actually cost me $20.40.

I also ordered 2 Case pocket knives: Mini Copperhead w/ Stainless Steel Blades & Stag Handles & a Worn Peanut w/ Stainless Steel Blades & Harvest Orange Bone Handles. I also ordered these from Amazon (different order). The cost from Amazon (with free shipping) was about $16 less than SMKW (who also charge shipping).

And so my journey into the realm of collecting pocket knives begins. I am quite excited!

Thanks to all who responded to my questions with much needed advise.

Congratulations! Sounds like you're off to a good start. It's great to try out different patterns to decide what's best for you. At the beginning it's a lot of that, trying out things, forming your preferences, deciding between types of knives.

Rough Rider really does make great knives for the price point. Case is likely you're next best step up, until you get into the expensive ones lol.

Congratulations and welcome to the crew. =]

If you are really into the more "traditional" style knives, like the ones you've been looking at and buying, check out the traditional forum here. Lots of guy that know what they're talking about, can give you solid advice, and answer your questions well.

It sounds like you have a great start! You will be able to sample a lot of patterns to see which ones work for you. I'm a big fan of the stockman pattern, but I also carry a Rough Rider Pen Whittler all the time.

Not a bad start. As others have mentioned, you seem to favor "traditional" designs, so take a look at the traditional forum here, they can probably make all sorts of recommendations.

Way to go fairhaven. Other than payment, making the best choice is the toughest thing for me. You are in the pool now, enjoy the water.

I'm not sure what kind of collecting you are interested in. If you're like me and are buying with the intention of carrying and using them, I have a suggestion to make. Now that you have a nice selection, hold off buying any more for a while. Spend some time carrying and using the ones you already bought. It's easy to get into a buying frenzy when you first start out, so I recommend taking it slowly so that you don't go broke, get burned out, or find yourself with a ton of inexpensive knives that you don't use instead of having spent the same amount on a smaller number of higher quality knives that you would actually get some enjoyment out of.

Now if you are into the collecting for display aspect of the hobby, that's a different thing, so,the above advice may not apply.

Also, spend some time reading through the Maintenance, Tinkering, and Embellishment section of the forum here and learn about sharpening and knife care. There's plenty of good knowledge there and things that you'll need to know to keep your knives sharp and pretty.

Post some pics in traditional once they come in. once you're ready for another one I'd suggest trying something in cv, you might find you like it a lot more than stainless.
