Bought some bits - what should I use these tins for?

I've been buying bits of stuff and I spotted three little tins in a department store on sale - I couldn't resist!

They are the three in the middle, one has a ranger band on. They have candles inside and are about 1 5/8" diameter and 1 1/8" high

So, now I've got them, what do I put in them?

I could use them for tinder, PJB, maybe even have a candle in one ;)

I also got a box full of little spools for thread etc.

Answers on a postcard please (remember those TV days???)

Take the pellets, load them in your rifle, shoot them at the new Ferro stick while holding it over the candle. This should make a nice flame! Then - mail me the knife on the right of the photo! ;)

Seriously though - check out this picture:

You add a small piece of wood to the bottom (use a hole saw in a drill to make the blank) and screw it in place.

Then you use a dremel cut off wheel and make a cross in the side. It makes a GREAT tinder box to practice your fire making. Fill it with shredded cedar wood - Drop in the coal - and blow in from the top or the side. When you want to put it out - simply put the lid on and cover the hole with a rag. The charred wood makes the next coal easier!

Hey TF, that's pretty cool (or hot...)

I think I'll give that a try, thanks!

Oh and sorry, the little knife's definitely a keeper. It's my best sausage knife!

Use one of the tins as a charcloth maker. Pop a small hole at the top, add some cotton pieces in and then heat it over a camp stove until the smoke stops coming out of the top.

I'd use them for tinder. One thing I like to do is put a nail in the tin, so its easy to punch a hole in the top should the need ever arise for making charcloth. This saves the point of the knife from damage instead of drilling the hole, plus some knives aren't pointy enough for it anyway.

I would cheerfully suggest a couple of MK IV British Leyland Mini 1000's. I'd think they'd make excellent bobbers with the windows rolled up. You can stuff them full of cotton wool and small lead sinkers, and you can wrap fishing line around the outside. I would not think you could fit more than 2-3 per tin, but they might come in handy. :) Just a bit of teasing there.

Bangers and mash! One of my favorites! Where can a guy find traditional bangers in the USA?

Mine too - they were Porkinson's Bangers - delicious!

Hopefully someone can help you out. I would send you some, but we'd both likely get in trouble with the customs people and the bangers would be furry by the time they arrived.

I hope so. I love them! I might have to go to the local Irish Pub and inquire. I hesitate to buy from them as they will be expensive, methinks.

if those were mine, I'd keep one candle(can cheer you up, or help keep warm, light it inside the AMK heatsheet or a similar blanket) and I'd light on, coat cotton balss in the melted wax, and make a bunch of magnesium and fatwood shavings and fill the last with that

I need some spools like that. Where should I look for them?

They are sewing machine bobbins - I got a box of 100 from the auction place. They should be available at any sewing-type shops, they are very common parts and only a few $ for a handful.

You can get cheap steel (or cheaper plastic) ones but these are nice aluminium ones. They also come in a range of sizes, around 3/4" diameter and 3/8 thick.

Carefully, melt some beeswax (art or hobby store) and mineral oil (laxative section of drug store) together and pour into one of those handy empty tins and let cool.

This stuff works great on blades, handles (wood and stag), and leather sheaths.
Works as a preservative and rust inhibitor as well as being food safe.

Also can be used as a moisturizer on your hands, lip balm, cutting boards... lots of uses and is CHEAP.

A great addition to a gear kit.
