I bought these two CRKT knives on Ebay the other day to start my knife collection with. This is the CR-M60-16-NK and the M16-14M

Two not too bad choices. Congratulations.
Are you ready for your Sebenza or Busse yet? ;)

The M16-14 is a beefy knife. In my opinion not needed if one already has a fixed blade. Although both knives are great, I personally own the M16-13M (military... just means a green handle), and it's wonderful, except for the AUS-8 has great toughness, but lacks blade retention in my personal use (cutting hard plastic, and odds-and-ends).

The difference between our two knives is that the 13 has a skinnier handle which I think is nice, and flows well with the blade design (spear-type).

Congrats though, and enjoy. Give us some feedback...

Thanks guys.
I am a greenhorn to knife collecting so I have much to learn and am just buying the knives that I like.
I am not interested in investing in quality, high-dollar knives at this time, but who knows down the road. :D

Buying and trying is a way to learn about knives.

Add in the actual experience you attain with what you read here and you'll be the knowledge man.

Congrats on the purchases.

That M16 line (and its breathren) sure is popular.

Good knives to start a collection with.

I dislike tantos, but it is good for you to try them out to see if you like them.

Great knives. I like the designs.

The fixed blade was desgined by custom knifemaker Jim Hammond. He has designed a few knives for CRKT including the new Desert Cruiser.

Not a bad start. My advice? Buy whatever YOU like; just get quality made pieces. Avoid China, Pakistan, India and you should be fine. :)

Good luck with your purchases.

I have the M16 14M, as someone mentioned it's a big folder. I bought mine without handling one first and I was surprised by the size. But it's built like a tank and the extra lock gives a feeling of security. The flipper is cool and after a few minutes you'll be able to open the blade pretty quickly.
I think it's supposed to have an OD handle but mine looks gray. I might buy the smaller version with the thinner blade.

welcome to the addiction mikev!

i started the same way you are. even though i grew up around it, my dad was a collector, i did not REALLY get into it until my dad passed away. the first few knives i have for EDC was a gerber LST with removable clip, that i lost, and then replaced with a smith and wesson small SWAT knife. i venture to say that the gerber was probably a better knife overall, but the s&w was better looking, and i ended up getting a few more of them.

as danbo said, keep away from the real cheapies and you'll be ok. but, some of the best manufacters out there still use japan to make some of their knives (i.e. spyderco) and they are top notch quality. you hang around here for a while and it will all come to you, faster than you can ever believe :)

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the comments.
I also ordered a Sharpmaker so hopefully I can get these knives even sharper.

mikev... a tip on the sharpmaker as well;

be patient with it. took me a while to learn on it and get my stuff good and sharp. don't cut corners to get the job done faster, watch the video and look at book... makes a big difference.

good luck

The knives just came from the Post Office.
Awesome knives!

Here's the knives together.
My son's Ka-Bar is on top followed by my CRKT M60 and M-16-14M

looks like you raisin' the kid up right too... good job :)

He's a Marine and is on leave from bootcamp at MCRD San Diego.
The Ka-Bar is still a Marine favorite and he wanted one of the black ones for himself. Not sure what they will give him at Camp Pendelton when he goes there for SOI on Tuesday the 24th.
