This is my first post at this forum and have been reading for only a month or so.

Somehow became enamored with SOG knives and Santa decided to bring a couple of special Christmas presents: a SOG Bowie and a SOG Seal 2000.

First and second impressions: Incredible. These are not only aesthetic works of art, but fantastic tools. The Bowie is the first knife I have ever taken out of any box and immediately began to clear-cut the hair forest on my left arm, I've never ever owned a knife so sharp. Nor have I ever been able to make a knife that sharp.
The Bowie is my favorite, what a beauty.

The Seal is also an awesome knife. Plain, simple, unadorned, and obviously superlative beyond my limited understanding of all the technical specs it has met.
I've used it during the holidays to carve several dinner roasts, and it certainly makes for an interesting steak knife !!

I know I've definitely moved Uptown with these knives, they are the best I've ever experienced.

Yeah, what he said...;)

You should try the Bowie for carving!:D With its deep hollow grind, it should do a FINE job of it.

Seriously, glad to hear you love the knives - the Bowie is one of my favourite SOGs!:D

Please do feel stick around and join our discussions! We have a great little Forum here!

WELCOME!!!

Thank You for the kind welcome !!

What really caught my eye was the customer service aspect. Someone had made an adverse comment regarding his SOG knife, and Ron Andersen simply said, ".... send it back...."
If that doesn't define customer service, I don't know what does. And that sort of positive can-do attitude really appeals to the Navy SeaBee in me.

And yes, I used the Bowie for carving the roast the next day, and it also makes a most impressive steak knife. As I mentioned, it is my favorite: so compact, so well-balanced, great "feel" and "heft" and awesome looks..... and that thick, thick blade, one doesn't need worry about breaking it.

As an aside on the Seal knife, I've spent quite a few years at the Naval Amphib Base in Coronado, CA and watched many dozens of SEAL trainees run around doing their thing. There are of course other knives which have survived the rigors of that training, but the Seal knife is surely one fearsome weapon in the hands of those guys. And should it become their weapon of choice after graduation that speaks very highly of it as the best tool of their trade. I know they don't want second-best.

Cheers,

Carl

New Pig Hunter,

The SOG Bowie IS an excellent knife, but you should see its' stainless brother, the SOG Trident!...The Trident IS my favorite SOG, and it's so "pretty".:).

Also, that Seal 2000 that you bought...Another excellent knife, but now you NEED its' BIG-brother, the SOG Tigershark. BTW, the Tigershark would make a GREAT pig-hunting knife, as it has a 9 inch-long, 1/4 inch-thick blade!:D.

Hey Carl,

Good to see you made it here into BladeForums.com and take it from my professional opinion: you've been bitten with the SOG bug!

Enjoy this place. Here in the SOG Forum, you'll find some die-hard SOG nuts. Throughout the forums, you'll find people that know more about knives than you could ever have imagined!

Let me know if there's anything I can do for you!

Take care!

once again, Thank You for the warm welcome !!

I gave serious consideration to the Trident but decided on the Bowie for the leather handle and the blued steel.

As for the Tigershark, I don't think I have enough arm strength to handle that one !! Great looking knife, more like a mini-machete, I could have used it a few months ago trailbreaking on a very brushy hillside climb.

Two other SOG knives really have my eye.
First is the Gov't Agent; a Bowie-style blade is my absolute favorite of designs.
Second is the X-42 Field Knife, that would seem to be a perfectly-sized piggie skinner.

And I'm a lucky fellow also, next Monday morning I'll be tramping some hillsides looking for piggies in need of field dressing. The SOG's will be going with me and I hope to give 'em multiple workouts.

Cheers,

Carl

Carl, the Government (Uncoated Agent, discontinued a year ago) is one of my all time Favorite knives. Mine has seen a lot of use and it goes with me just about everywere with me. Get one, you'll love it.:)

As for the X-42 Field knife, I also want one, and it does look like it could skin a hog or anything else for that matter.;) Will probably add the X-42 Field knife (or it's little brother the Field Pup - depending on money) to my camp gear in the next few months.:)

"I'll be tramping some hillsides looking for piggies in need of field dressing" - Sounds like fun.:) Hope you have a wonderfull time. If you get the chance, take some pics and share them with us. We would love to see them. Action shots of you and your knives would be really cool.;)

Heber,

Yes indeed, a Gov't Agent may find it's way to my house one of these days. But in the same way I have too many wristwatches (is that possible ??), I'm in the same quandry with knives. And the Gov't will be my first choice when the day arrives. I really like the Bowie-style and the Gov't has such great lines !!

In the meantime, I hope to help a piggie or three participate in some field testing of the Bowie and the Seal. I'll have my nothing-fancy digital camera along and will certainly share any good pics.

Cheers,

Carl

it is always enjoyable to look back to see where it all started, and this is where my SOG adventures began.....

Two years later I'm still enamored with the Bowie, and I've learned that glockman was correct: the Tigershark really is a great knife to have when in the field.
I never have added a Gov't Agent to the collection, although several other SOG's have been added, and two SOG's have left to help other friends in need.

Today, 01 JAN 2005, was a quiet SOG day. I got out the leather strop & the micro-fine honing compound and touched up the "sharp" on several of the knives in the collection..... and in the process de-forested large tracts of land on both arms.

Happy SOG Year To All !!

Carl

Happy new year Carl, be careful and don't cut your self ! They make razor blades for that kind of stuff you know !

Robbie Roberson ;)

Wow!! this is an old thread. Carl, thanks for bringing it back up and posting an update. Sounds like your sharpening skills have come a long ways. I've been using my belt sander to sharpen then hone on a sand paper strop. MY arm has been bair for months.

So whats going to be your next SOG??

Heber

the next SOG will be the pass-around-for-field-testing BOWIE that Leatherman will be sending my way soon.....

and expectantly in time for my pig hunting trip in early February !!

Cheers,

Carl

Nice! That knife will make a great Pig sticker. :D
