Bourbon help - Off topic

Wild Turkey 101 is my favorite and cheap (about $21 in my neck of the woods).
Buffalo Trace is much better and far smoother than Knob Creek or Maker's Mark IMO.

There's no need to start exploring bourbon by buying a bottle of ORVW 23 Year. If you look around, you can find the 10 Year stuff for about $30 a bottle. I picked up a bottle at K&L Wine Merchants in Redwood City about ten days ago. In terms of other brands, my favorites are Wild Turkey 101, Knob Creek, and Bulleit. I didn't care much for Maker's Mark nor Buffalo Trace.

Has anybody tried Blantons Whiskey and would like to share their experiences?
I am currently thinking of getting a bottle of it, maybe Blantons gold or the cask strength one.

Thanks,

l.

I'm cheap but I like good brown liquor. I choose George Dickel #8 or #12 and here is a little info on #12.

George Dickel No. 12 is distilled from corn, barley and rye, and it has "no preservatives, dyes, or strange ingredients you can't pronounce." It is double distilled then charcoal filtered through sugar maple before being "chill-mellowed" for 7-10 days. Then it's plopped into charred American white oak barrels and aged for no less than 8 years. It's just slightly darker than JD No. 7 and much more complex. It has notes of honey, barrel, nuts, and a spearmint spiciness.

Buffalo Trace is the best bang for the buck - has the taste of a much more expensive bourbon. Actually, anything that I've tried from the Buffalo Trace distillery (Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Elmer T. Lee, Blanton's and Rock Hill Farm) have been awesome, with the nod going to Blanton's.

Also, Four Roses (Small Batch or Single Barrel) and Wild Turkey Rare Breed are also on my best bang for the buck list. Old Grand Dad 114 might be the best buy on the market, but has a very distinctive mushroom flavor to it. I get a hankering for it only very infrequently.

Because of this thread I just picked up Elijah Craig 12 year for $23.

I think it is on par with Knob Creek....

Smooth with nice vanilla and sweetness - really like it!!!

I spent the afternoon touring Buffalo Trace and the hit a local store and scored some 13yr old pappy rye. Good week for Pappy around here, I scored a 12yr, 15yr, 20yr and another 23yr decanter from different shops. I'm bourbon and infi poor now for sure hopefully Jerry will take his time with the BWM LE and BOSS streets.

It's good to live in the heart of bourbon country!

unfortunately we can't get the gold in the US and I have never seen cask strength other than in the case today at the distillery. There are 6-7 varieties of blanton's marketed to other countries. They were bottling a batch for Russia today.

I picked up a bottle of ORVW 12yr "special reserve" a couple of weeks ago, great stuff, looking forward to trying some more varieties. Smooth and rich, great flavor.

Austin Nichols Wild Turkey 101 for the win, runner up Old Grand Dad, and for my more yuppified friends, Knob Creek.
