Well i finally tried it. I got my lazy butt up and tried to make a fire with a bow and drill. Me and my little nephew went to the woods with our sheath knives and ax and we tried it. He had all the confidence in the world in me making fire cause to him i am the coolest uncle in the world. I am ex Army infantry, and a gulf war veteran....Well ,,,,,,it didnt happen. I could not do it for anything in the world. Oh i got smoke but thats all i got. Well i also got a cut on the thumb and my leg but other than that. Thats it!...Now i know the meaning of practice makes perfect means. I really thought it would be easy. Man was i wrong......Ill try again tommorrow....Just thought i would share that.

Still doin' better than me, amigo! I have yet to get off my butt and into the woods to give it a try.

But I wouldn't be too down on yourself, if it were an easy thing to do there wouldn't be a thousand tutorials online and a million threads in this forum about it! Something tells me that your nephew was too excited to be headed out to the woods with his cool uncle to be dissapointed.

Like many skills, it is really best to learn it under controlled conditions. Once learned, apply it in the woods. Spend some time selecting the wood and cordage, time making up the kit and practicing. Then go out and impress the nephew.

Regardless of your lack of successs you did learn in the attempt. Apply what you learned and use the new knowledge on the next attempt. Once it all comes together for you, you'll wonder why it took so long to master. Although it is really very easy to do, it is also easy to get frustrated and give up.

Kudos for getting out there and trying!

Thanks guys, I aint giving up. Im gonna try again this afternoon. Like you said i have seen some things i am doing wrong and so the next try will be a little different. Ill let ya know how it went.

I've only been working on it a little lately. I'm half temped to just go backpacking and flat out refuse to use a spark of any sort and not have fire until i create it.

edit: I have done it once but can't seem to recreate that.
