Bow Drill Success

It's been kind of chilly in the desert this last week or so. I think I will have to venture off and give this a shot ASAP. Congratulations!

The reason I like friction fire is because it makes you properly prepare every aspect of your fire. You can not skip any steps in gathering tinder, kindling, and fuel. There is allot of times that I rushed my fire lay when using a match or lighter. Usually I still get the fire going, but on a cold snowy or rainy day I would fail due to not having enough tinder, or small kindling. With a friction fire you learn what it takes to nurse that coal into a fire with nothing but well processed wood and oxygen. Attention to detail is important in every aspect of fire and life.

So I've spent a bit of time over the past couple days working on my bowdrill skills. I had a piece of cedar that I collected over the summer just for this purpose. Seeing as it's cold here I decided I would do it in the comfort of my own garage. I still can't get a coal every time but am getting better at it. I intend to keep working at it. Heres some pics which hopefully motivate others to try.

It is truly amazing to get a coal the first and every time for me, I finally got one from a hand drill last night and it's almost sacred....not to mention the blisters.
