I had the day off today so I went for a quick hike with Marcelo. Scored some Tinder Fungus:thumbup:

Then I went home sharpened all my scandis, did laundry, and stripped an Ironwood stave and sanded it a bit for a walking stick project. I felt a cold coming on, which sucks so I decided to hang on the couch. That got old quick, so I figured why not make a video of a bow drill:D

So now, I will force you all to watch me doing a bow drill. :p

Good demo, Tony. If I hadn't know how to do it before, I would now. Now I see that I've been doing it wrong all this time. Now I see the trick is actually in having a nice red cushion for the knee: I can tell that it makes all the difference.

great video tony! i liked the full view to catch the all the movements. have some zinc for that cold! :)

Good video Tony, now I suppose I'll have to make an effort to try it myself...but from all I've read here, I think you made it look easier than it's going to be. Ahh, another project!

how do you prepare the tinder fungus?

Sorry bro missed the question.

I discard everything but that brown copperish colored part. Then I let it dry out. Once dried out, you can use it it catch a spark. It won't flame, but it will smolder and grow a coal.

I know there is a way to boil it and flatten it out to a paper like substance, but I never tried it....

I think this makes the fourth time I've watched this video...and it's still great. I really gotta try splitting some of the Cedar I have out back....I really need to do this.

Cool vid, man! I still owe you and Talfuchre big for helping me learn the ol' bow drill trick.:thumbup:

Nice job, but if I might suggest something my wilderness instructor keeps telling me: "Use all the length of the bow".

Your technique looks good, but you would use less energy.

(But you still are more efficient than me)

Nice demo. Thanks! Can give more info on Tinder fungus and where it is found. I have heard mention of it for the first time recently, and don't know it's origin.
