People in the Old West had so much chaw in their front lips all the time that they couldn't make a hard "B" sound. Therefore, the "B" is silent and the proper old timey way to say it is "Ooooie" knife.

In 2013, Bow-ee.

;)

heard it called a 'boo-ee' for the first time a few months back and I laughed! the same laugh that exploded from my mouth when I first heard a carbine called a 'car-bean'!

I guess it's regional, as alot of my US pals have never heard of a 'car-bean' and call the knife a bowie. Alot of bowie knives were made and imported from Sheffield (England) to the rest of the world in the years gone by, and as they still make and call them bowies, I will call them the same!

This has been one of the more informative threads I've read in the gen discussion section in a while.

Thanks everyone for the info!
