Update:

Went through the Hunters Safety course... Got my card early on this spring.

Club fell apart immedietly after the course, havent spent much time thinking about bow and arrow since then.

Perhaps its time to act and track some stuff down and learn it!

:D

Just in casesomeone hasn,t mentioned it . The bowyers bible is a good way to go . So is a local bowyer . You may not think there is one in your area . They are sometimes low key .Most are great guys willing to loan a hand especially if you buy a couple of things to help you on your way .

I have bow hunted for many years. I used to shoot a compound, but about 10 years ago, I bought a Cari-Bow Recurve 62# @ 27.25". I have shot cedar arrows from day one. I love to take my kids out "stump" shooting, it's a great way to get them introduced to the sport and to hone their skills. I have hunted from the gound and from tree stands, both have been very successful for me. You can read all kinds of hunting tips, but the only way you are going to find out what works is to get out there and try. Two things will make it fun and successful for you 1. PRACTICE (from all types of stances) you will not believe what kind of positions you might have to shoot from. 2. Always hunt with the wind in your face, you don't need the scent blocks and cover scents, they just help a little. Ok, maybe one more 3. Know your limitations on what shots you can take and make a clean kill, don't wound an animal. You owe it to that animal to make it a quick and clean kill. Part of this is to study the anatomy of the animal you are hunting, know where the shoulder starts and stops, know who big the lung area is, where the heart is, and what angles will expose the vitals the best. Bow hunting is just way to much fun :D

Is there an entry level cheap cheap bow brand that is half decent?

The Martin Jaguar recurve (~US$200'ish, 30lb to 55lb limbs available in 5lb increments) is THE best bang-for-buck bow on the market today. just budget for a new string (the dacron one it's supplied with is junk) and a decent rest (the plastic thing it's supplied with is also junk).

another option is to look for new, past seasons bows for sale. for example, i found my bow (Fred Bear Showdown, 70lb compound, 2009(?) model) for sale, new in box, for ~US$350 online the other day. or, wait until the 2012 bows are announced and older 2010 and 2011 models will be available at knock down rates.

for making your own bow, i believe there are some kits on the market which would be a good place to start. i'd also make a trip to teh local archery club and have a chat with some of the members, i'm sure they can point you in the right direction and/or give you some nifty tips.

If he had saved about $0.78 per day when he asked that question, he'd now have enough to buy that bow. :D
