I think the business end of your spindle is too pointy. You need to transfer downward pressure into friction... and with such steep sides, you lose that resistance and it just wants to drill through. Once you have properly seated the drill, you could even cut the tip off flat. IMO, the hole should look like a bowl not a funnel.

Good call on the jewelweed. I've been experimenting with it for mosquitos too. Right now, I can't tell if it is actually repelling them or just preventing the bite from irritation and itch. Whatever the case, one of my legs was heavily bitten, while the other was bite free. Interesting stuff!
