I just finished this one last night. It has a frame construction handle. The blade is 8" long, O1 steel. The scales are blackwood and the fittings are all mild steel. Now I have to go and make a sheath.. Thanks for looking!

Fine clean lines. What a beauty. Great job.

Thanks guys for the kind words. I'm really proud of this one. I think it may be my best work so far. Some closs up shots..

Very, very nice!

But I have to plead ignorance. What does "frame construction" mean?

Great work!

Andy

It's a hidden tang knife with a piece of steel that "frames" the tang and sandwiched by the handle scales. The peice of steel that profiles the handle is the frame which is why you see the 6 little pins around the perimiter. The blade tang goes down the center.. Did I make sense, Andy?:o

That is definitely a nice knife. Very well done! I may have to drop by on my way home from work on Monday to look at it.

I think so. So, there is a tang which goes through the handle?

And also a sort of rectangular frame. The tang goes through the short sides of the rectangle? So it looks like a full tang, but isn't.

Right?

Andy

Andrew - You basically have it right. Imagine a stick tang knife with slots cut into the edge of the handle. Insert whatever you want into these slots. In this knife, Ray used some mild steel to fill in the slots, so it looks like a full tang. If you want to get fancy, you can use more expensive materials, like damascus, mokume, pearl, etc. You are only limited by your imagination (or your wallet).

I have one from Ray that has paper micarta scales with what looks like a linen micarta frame (Ray can correct me if I'm wrong).
