Bowie hammer--in

Day 1 was fantastic! Bowie's an awesome host. Great demo's.

And... I graduated from an angle grinder in a vise to Mr. Burt Foster's now (former) Bader grinder.

Thanks a ton, Burt! You're a scholar and a gentleman!

Guess I didn't realize you were glutton for punishment, too. Can you imagine the whining if you, Rob, and I got together? ;) I had to skip Bowie's place today, but I'll look you up tomorrow...

LOL, yeah, that would be quite a site...all complaining about being overworked, underpaid, and all getting the Big Orange Screw. :)

Sorry I missed you yesterday, unfortunately, I won't be there tomorrow...got a darn mid term project that is due early next week and have to spend the day writing code and doing calculations...would much rather be there hanging out with you guys and hammerin' on some steel!

:)

The final day was fantastic, too. Alan Longmire did an awesome pipe hawk demo. Lots of visiting going on afterwards. Those who couldn't make it to Bowie's should keep your calendar clear for next year's hammer-in.

Thanks again, Bowie, for your hospitality!

Well, this was my first visit to "Bowie's" hammer-in.........

Although I have attended other events, I will say that I have never been made to feel more at home.

Ron (Bowie) is a super individual with a sense of humor that jumps out and captures you. He is a comedian, an intellect, and a true friend.

Thank you Cap'n for being who you are and for sharing so much information.

Robert

I am back home and its a bit like coming off a high.....back to reality  .

I had a great weekend.

Ron and Phyllis, thank you so much for your hospitality.

Thanks to the knife suppliers for enabling me to purchase a lot of new and needed materials.

Thanks to all the demonstrators who taught me lots of new things and made me think more about the things I thought I knew

Thanks to the guys that gave me advice and encouragement, and a special thanks to Burt Foster for the additional time he gave myself and Jim for the JS testing.

It was a great weekend and I look forward to meeting everyone again in the not to distant future. :)

Kevin Davey

An addition...

Kevin is being vague and modest by it, but I'll say it. I had the honor of supervising two JS performance tests: Jim Gardner and Kevin Davey. Both passed with flying colors, and I'm glad to have been there to see it.

Jim and I were in the same intro class at the ABS school in 2002 and his work has come a long way since then! He tested with a very elegant, thin and narrow integral forged from a 3/4" round bar of 5160. His blade was through hardened and differentially tempered. Most of the bend was teken up at the point that the integral bolster met the blade, but the blade itself went past 45 degrees, and returned to within probably 3 degrees of straight!

I met Kevin at Bowie's last year, and he is a great guy. He even helped me brush up on some English (read Brittish) profanity, because you never know when that'll come in handy. His test knife was a big, wide bowie / camp knife type blade of 52100 (if I remember). His blade was edge hardened with a soft back. Despite being at least 1/4" thick at the thickest point, it flexed beautifully.

Both knives did great on all parts of the test, with good edge retention and no edge cracking during the flex test. It was a good illustration that you can make almost any type of knife for a JS performance test if you know your steel, and you understand what to do.

Thanks also to Ron and Phyllis, you guys did so much work to get ready for this weekend. Most of us will never understand how much work goes into one of these events, until we have to do it. Thank you all!

lol....now dont go confusing 'profanity' with 'terms of endearment'.... :D

What a great weekend! Ditto on the cudos to Ron and Phylis! They warmly opened thier home to us and hosted another wonderful event. Congrats to Kevin and Jim. I'm so glad to Jim back again this year with a strong determination to exceed...which he did!

Now we have the long wait untill next year :(
....362 days...and counting.

CYA again next year!
