First photo...The W2 is forged out, normalized twice, then heated to just above
critical and quenched, followed by a brief cycle just below critical.

Hand sanding after HT.
An arch made of 5160 supports nearly the full length of the
blade during the sanding process. This keeps the blade from flexing
much, and keeps knuckles from dragging on the bench top.

Sanding blocks/bars of different widths are used....narrow,to
cut fast, and wide to promote flatness. Cutting lube is WD 40.

At 1200 X, the blade's not quite finished. The remaining finish work
will be done after the other parts are fitted.

Thanks Russ ..One Day..
still these are my favorite threads thanks for taking the time...

Perfect reflection of C-clamp on blade but still more work needed!
Incredible finish-great work.
You say its promised but I haven't gotten an email yet :D

Oh the dreams we dream, I'm with you on this one Riad

This one is looking great! I love these in progress threads. Thank you russ and the other makers for taking the time to do these threads.

Riad,Michael,Keith,Trevor,Peter,Matt...Thanks..!

Next....The tool used for opening the tang channel,
in the stag, is just a couple of sawz-all type blades
soldered togetger, and tapered. Drawn backwards,
it pulls the material out....really an asset on through
tang....or blind tang construction.

Love the blade; love the stag; trying not to drool too hard until I see how they're introduced and fitted. Thanks for these pictures.

Mmmm.... stag..... somebody's going to be a seriously happy camper with this fine piece!

That is a great idea! I'm going to do that. Thanks!
Looking forward to seeing this one done.

LOL....Russ, you are the undisputed king of DIY, what with your Sawz-all broach and the Fiebings stag trick, which I now use:thumbup: I bit the bullet and plopped down long green on a couple of John Perry's handle broaches and couldn't be happier.
