Bowie knife comparison

Horizon_Seeker:

The sheaths loosen up nicely and won't follow the blade. It is a combination of the sheath breaking in and becoming supple and also expanding [ stretching some ] as in a fine gun holster worn day in and out.

Have you considered the Fallkniven mine remover.
It's got like a 9" blade, but it's not exactly a bowie.

Actually, I'm very partial to the Western W-49 bowie. One of the older 440C models made by Western

The sheaths with the Ontario Bagwells and the CS Laredo do loosen up for a good release, but they also absorb moisture, fatten up a little, and will bend some. This means that if you carry them a lot concealed, it's possible for the end of the blade to come through the sheath. Had one customer who waited too long to send his Belle to me for a Southern Comfort - 5" of blade went through his factory sheath and his $600 leather coat. If you are serious about carrying one of these, have someone make you a Concealex/kydex sheath for it. Bill Bagwell's personal Hell's Belle sheath is tipped in silver to prevent this.

Brownie,

Mostly :). Off radar for a couple weeks, talk with you when I get back.

the point about the knife going through the leather sheath could happen, but if a kydex sheath is made for the bowie, by nature of the kydex sheath which is a friction fit, wouldn't it defeat the purpose of a loosened leather sheath, which is to draw the knife without drawing the sheath with it?

or can a combination of leather with kydex chape/throat be made for these bowies?

Kydex can be fitted in many different ways, limited only by the skill of the sheath maker. Mike Sastre of River City Sheaths makes a great inside-the-belt/IWB sheath in kydex. He fits the sheath so that the knife comes free with just a light tug.

Mike makes the southern comfort sheath for IWB on the Bagwells and the knockoffs. It works exactly like a good worn leather sheath and will not coe out with the knife.

As Bob stated, he adjusts the sheath to do this before it goes out. He needs the knife to do this if it is custom.
