I have a question.Does anyone out there know where I can purchase a Bowie Knife that looks like the San Antonio Bowie made by Lile Knifeworks in Arkansas. I like his knife a great deal but since he is a customer maker of knives, his prices are out of my range. Four digits and up. I would like to stay below $300.00. What I'm looking for is something like the knife used on a very old TV show from the mid 1950's titled "The Legend or Adventures of Jim Bowie". Not exaclty sure of the correct name of the show. The knife made by Lile Knifeworks is the best I have even seen, however I would prefer black micarta handle. I will settle for stag or bone however. Anyone that can point me in the right direction has my thanks.

I don't know a specific maker, but I would check out International Knife Directory's site. I believe if you click on "Custom Makers" (or something like that) it will take you to a menu that has several subcategories, one of which is Bowies. Bowie specialists are a dime a dozen, so I would be surprised if you couldn't find what you are looking for! I believe the site is: http://www.horn-net.com/ikd
Or it may be: http://www.horn-net.com/~ikd
Lemme know if these don't work and I'll find it...

I have no idea of the quality but the Linder (solingen) bowie is probably the closest you'll find to the looks of the Lile and the list price is around $125 and their Arkansas toothpick lists at $95. The Bagwells are nice lookers. Heard lots of good stuff about them. They're worth looking at too.

If you can get a handmade bowie for near $300
go for it. bite the bullet and go the extra couple bucks if needed. In the long run you'll have a REAL knife that you can have more pride in ownership than in a factory knife that isn't worth very much.

The best bang for the buck in fontier-looking Bowies is probably the Ontario Bagwells. I've handled the "Gambler" smaller version and the heft and balance was just ungodly good. REALLY impressive...from all acounts, the bigger ones are as good if not better. Most of the better net dealers sell Ontario, and these are easily the best Ontarios made.

Another "good bang for the buck" in that price range is an Ernie Mayer Black Cloud Bowie of any of several types but these are a lot more "futuristic looking". Damn fine pieces though, and at $300ish for a true handmade in ATS34 with a great heat-treat, they're a steal. Does anyone know Ernie's current URL?

Try Fowler knives @ http://www.homestead.com/customknives/homepage~ns4.html

I wanted a large bowie with integral guard with more of a fighters balance and build than that of a camp knife. Along the lines of the black cloud/Randel 1 but with some of my own touches.I told him what I wanted the knife to do and the feel I wanted. I recieved my knife a WEEK after he recieved my check and it was Awesome. Balance was right at the guard the blade was scary sharp. It shaved hair of my arm at a touch and the knife is a beauty to look at. I got it with the black oxide finish and has an 8 inch blade. On top of that it came with a well made kydex sheath. I recieved kydex sheaths with a lot of the knives I buy and many times I think "he should just stick to making knives and farm out the sheath making. Not here wonderful sheath. I got all of this for around 300 bucks. :-) It has quickly become my favorite play thing and is in my hand minutes after coming home from work every day.

I picked up a brand new bone handled bowie made by Rigid at a gun/knife show last year for $25! The knife was made in Italy. It was cheap but actually quite an attractive looking knife, especially for the price. The number on the knive is R638.

Not a custom knife at not a custom price. They were selling bunches of them at the show. I walked out grinnin'
