I have an 1/8" thick piece of O1 that I'd like to make a bowie out of but, I'm wondering if that's thick enough? If so, what's the longest I can safely make the blade and how wide? Thanks.

are you forging or using stock removal? My favorite bowie knife growing up was a Case XX bowie knife that was only 1/8" thick and it did great. Light, and man could it cut.

1/8 is plenty thick for most bowie styles, I make a EDC bowie which is about 11" overall with a blade of about 6" from 1/8 stock the width is about 1 1/2. Dont grind too thin prior to HT to prevent warpage and you can do alot of adjustment to the blade below 400F after quench. You can see some of these on my website link below.

I'll be doing stock removal. Good to know it's plenty thick enough. Thanks for the replies.

Edit: Nice knives Patrick.

If anyone reading this has a picture of a bowie they made, it'd be great if you could post a pic here!

Not done yet, but this one (top blade in pic) is by stock removal from 1/8" O-1. Blade is 5-6" long, ~1.5" wide. I didn't set out to design a 'bowie' when I drew it, but I think it's kinda bowie-like.

I didn't mean you, Patrick! lol, I already went to your site and checked your pics out. Beautiful knives though.

That looks like it's going to be a nice one P J. Actually, it's almost exactly like my design.

I like to show off anyway, that does bring up the age old question, what is a bowie? After seeing folding bowies and ninja bowies it look like you get to make your own determination.
