I was given a bunch of small pieces of ram horn in December and decided to give it a go and use it as a spacer. There's 5 pieces of it glued together to make the spacer in the first picture. My lack of experience with it made me try soaking the whole handle in Nelsonite for at least 24 hours. I let it air dry for a couple weeks and then finished the handle off and let it set for a couple more weeks. I took a look at it after that and the ram horn expanded and every joint of the ram horn separated right at the surface and just looked like heck. I figured I had given it enough chances so I destroyed the handle and fittings removing it. This gave me a chance to try something a little different once again. I had purchased some Koa from Chuck Richards at the Oregon Mini Knife Show this past December and gave it a try. The fittings were made out of iron wagon wheel and the blade is W-2. What do you think?

What a beaut, I like the WI guard and ferrule, the pommel is no sloutch either. Great composition! Very Classic in my opinion, congratulations on a fine piece of workmanship!!!!

I'm not following you Ray.

Are those 2 knives?

Or are you saying that is the same knife and you destroyed the top handle and replaced it with the dog bone?

I think I understand now (i'm slow :o).

I'm sorry the rams horn didn't work out, because I love the contrast of the dark wood with the bone spacer.

I've got a left side of a good sized rams horn that I found at the lease. It's sun bleached pretty good. I can't even begin to think where to start with it for handle material. Maybe I'll send it to you so you can try again.

Or was that your first and last attempt at rams horn? :D

Really gorgeous, as always.

Paul, The picture I had taken with the rams horn was right after I finished it so there was no moving right then. It was perfect in my opinion then but shortly afterwards the problems started to show up.

Will, I was going for a dog bone look. For the most part when I hear dog bone bowie I see neither the dog or the bone. I spent some time looking at Jolly Roger flags to find one that had a good example of a bone that I had in my mind and tried to make make the butt cap to resemble it. I wasn't to sure if I could peen the tang in the crotch. I just ground a round spot on the end of a drift pin punch and it worked pretty good.

Eli, I'll do the ram horn again but I won't put it in Nelsonite. The Nelsonite is supposed to be a good stabilizer for wood but sure made the horn do some strange things.

When I took the picture of the bottom knife the camera sounded an alarm I had never heard before. What it was telling me is the card was full. Luckily I was able to located the owner's manual and I found out how to erase the card. I did it on my own without having to consult my son. Here's a couple better pictures. I even cleaned up the blade some more.

Hey Guy, Good to see you around. The problem was caused by the Nelsonite. That's my version of a dog bone.
