Here is another one of my rustic Bowie's forged from 3/10 of an inch thick 5160 spring steel, the idea was to create an old time pioneer looking knife that has been well taken care of over the years. The handle is tiger stripe maple with brass guard and pommel. This is a through (hidden) tang knife as were most knives and swords were until relatively recently. To insure plenty of strength so that the handle will never break the tang is kept nice and thick as it goes through the brass guard then tapers gently toward the pommel of the handle. A nut is silver brazed to the brass pommel the tang is threaded and the two are bolted down in place. Epoxy is used to completely fill any cavity in the handle to make sure no water can get down inside.
SPECS:
Steel is 3/10" thick 5160 high carbon and differentially heat treated with an edge approximately 59 to 60 Rc.
Blade Length is 9 inches with hammer marks and forging scales left on the flats giving the knife a character its own and the bevels seel.
Overall Length 14.3 inches
Handle is tiger strip maple dyed brown and sealed with Tung oil. Brass guard and pommel
Sheath is tooled 8/9 ounce brown leather
