i have a friend asking me to make a knife for him. its gonna be a bowie style and he wants a serrated/saw edge on the blades spine for sawing wood, notching etc. any one know of any bowie style knifes out there with functional teeth on the back? id like to see some examples for inspiration thanks alot.

I don't know of a bowie but the SOG Team Leader Survivor probably has the best spine saw I've tried. Not sure if that's what you're looking for but it's the first knife that comes to mind.

the team leader has the only saw other than the sak that actually works. mistwalker did extensive testing months back.. i would'nt put a saw on a bowie blade since it defeats what a bowies function is.

i agree my first design i showed him had a flat spine but he wanted one so i figured id ask around about it. thanks

The original Bowie had teeth, but not for a saw. They were used to extract knives when knife fighting. I have not used many saw blades on the back of knives. I do know the ones on my Lan-Cay M11 don't work well. The ones on the Glock knife work pretty well. Good luck!

yeah ive heard that and it makes sense. my buddy definately isnt trained or skilled to hook knifes from someone. so he probably would use a saw more but i think having a flat spine is better all around. by the way when rambo uses his bowie in rambo 2 to cut barb wire with the notched spine is that actually possible or just hollywood movie magic? always wondered haha

I don't know if you can the way he did it. The Lan-Cay has this wire cutter built in. It uses the knife and the sheath.

Talk him out of the saw back and convince him to get a good folding saw.

yeah me filing serrated teeth sounds like alot of work that i honestly dont want to tack onto the task of making a knife from scratch since im a novice. so far ive mainly practiced wood carving. heres a link to a wood sword i carved for my cousins birthday. he loved it and it took me 2 days with a wood rasp file to make. its full tang with a seperate pommel and guard fitted to it.

ill make a video of the bowie im designing and upload it maybe you guys can help me with some pointers on it. give me a bit as itll take me a while uploading and all. thanks

Really? I'd love to see a pic of one of those!

not sure how accurate this guy on youtube is but he talks about a bowie that has the serrated spine to lock and extract other blades and shows how it would work in theory.

He's not in any way, shape, or form historically accurate.

Bowies knife...whatever it was didn't have teeth on the spine.

If you want a "Bowie" knife with teeth on it...knock yourself out.
