Bowie with a touch of Scagel

Don't really see much Scagle in it but like the stacked cherry spacers and good stag. As mentioned above, the guard is particularly nice. Great "recycling"! Hiding more pleasant surprises in your stash?

Bowie with a touch of class. A lot of class, actually. Lin, really like the outcome on this piece! You picked out quite the blade. The Scagel look brings the cream to the top. Enjoy!!

Wow! So many cool aspects at work in this piece and they ALL hang together. :thumbup:

Beautiful and looks like it would feel great in hand.

Ok, I'll admit I'm fickle when it comes to my own knife. I like to keep on hand a Bowie that I can use but still looks pretty good even if it gets scuffed or ends up with a patina. So, I went through my old box of blades and picked out this one. It's 1095 steel X 10-1/8 inch X 2 inch wide. I hand sanded everything but the blade sides which are Scotch Brite finished. The fittings are a small amount of Bronze andforged 416 stainless, even the butt cap (domed in a swage block). The handle is stacked kiln dried Cherry wood. I turned each layer 90 degrees and clamped it up tight into a block. The Stag is Sambar that I bought without noticing a small crack up near the front so I cut that away and it worked out fine.

Beautiful knife - :thumbup::thumbup:

That's the touch of Scagel.

Thank you gentlemen.

As far as the Scagel influence goes, I like most of his knives but some were a bit awkward to my eye. He certainly had his style though and I can appreciate it. He had very good flow, I just cant get past the antler tines. I have learned a lot from studying the different influential makers of the past. But this knife is not meant to be a reproduction of a Scagel. It's has just a touch. :) The fact that it is stacked wood instead of leather just means that it is stiffer.

Wicked cool! That blade is so awesome you could use practically anything for the handle and it would still rock!

Yep Jason, but maybe another time. I was looking forward to doing some cutting in camp. The weather does what it wants to.
