Just received this image from Eric at Point Seven. I had this one shot at the NY show. I feel Coop could have shown this piece off better (more detail) but Eric's image has a portrait quality to it. Click on the thumb nail and chick on the image again for larger, clearer photo. I need to do the photo bucket hosting thing but have not had time. This bowie has a 12'' 3000 layer blade, damascus fittings and premo fossil walrus handle. Thanks for taking a look :)

I fondled the the knife at the NYC Show. Simply great and even better in person.
I am starting to suspect that Don's true mission in life is to make me crazy (in a good way) ;) .

Don, you make the best bowies I've ever seen. You inspire me to do my best to get better every time I see your work. Thanks for sharing that...

Thanks for all the comments guys, much appreciated!

Chuck, the damascus is 85% W2 and 15% wrought iron at 3000 layers. I made this steel to effect the hamon and not for a high contrast pattern, it worked:) The way I forge this steel, it only takes 5 welding heats, so very little carbon loss if any. I've tested this combo and it cuts very well also.

I got to take a look at this beauty at the ECCKS -- the ivory is much more beautiful in person, with lots of warm colors. Nice work :)

I love this type of damacus Don - it looks great with the hamon on it! Overall a very nice piece of work too - great piece of ivory on it.

So, if my carbon content math is correct, what you made is basically a vanadium enriched 1084 equivalent blade with a purty pattern and wild hamon...I BET it cuts:D I also like the idea of it not having any nickel in the mix so you get that old school look. Have you tried that mix at 500-1000 layers?

Great bowie Don. Have you tryed doing any more complex patterens- turkish-basket etc. It seems that this combo woulde work great with about anything that you wish to have a hambone.

Don, just 'Bowie'?? Let's not be modest in our titles! ;)

How about 'Damn Nice Bowie' or 'Elegant Bowie'?

Damn nice. Elegant.

Hamon work in damascus doesnt often suit my tastes, but this is a really nice example of it working, IMHO! Something to aspire towards..

Joe M., your math is correct, 1084, with vanadium and super low manganese

Jody, I have not tried this with more complex patterns, I'm not sure I would like it and diffenetly not on high contrast damascus.

Joe (canine) You're to cool man :D

David, I don't usually like a hamon on damascus either but this is very different pattern welded steel.

Thanks everyone!!!
