As you know I'm starting out in the knife making community and am thinking about a designing a bowie. There's only one problem, what is the deffinition of a Bowie Knife? What makes a Bowie a Bowie? What are your favourites? (pictures help too)

Many definitions are bandied about when it comes to Bowies. I'm most fond of what Bernard Levine has written concerning them. Try to find a copy of Levine's Guide to Knives and Their Values, or do some searching in his forum here on BladeForums.

Most any frontier shape of knife can be called a "Bowie". It covers a variety of dirks, fighters, and camp knives. The classic Bowie has a fat blade of heavy steel. A false edge (often sharpened ) and usually a large guard and handle.
