Ok, so here's the thing. I have a 30" bowsaw from Canadian tire. I don't much like it. The blade is loose, so it's hard to saw in a straight line, plus, I would like a longer saw and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a better saw that I can get. Price is not so much an obsticle.

Thanks.

have you considered building your own? there is nothing like building your own tools and then using them, nothing in the world can compare to the feeling of satisfaction.

on the one you bought, can you take pics of each end of the saw? there may be a hidden adjustment bolt....

Canadian Tire sells a few different cheap bow saws, and the house brand ones are terrible. Loose blades, dull blades, they get stuck all the time, I know what you mean. Of the saws you get at such a store, the Sandviks are the best of the value saws by far. A shorter saw is more stable too, so don't just buy the longest one available simply because it is bigger.

i bought my bow saw at home depot, its a fiskars 21 inch, seems perfect for what i do around here :D

Once you get a bit of twist in the frame a bowsaw will not cut straight. The large teeth and thin blade allows you to cut very quickly but depth of cut is limited by the D of the bow.

I prefer a quality logsaw. These will cut thru logs that are deeper than the D and you can also get them into tighter spots. Best I've used are made by Barnel - these are in the 'professional' category, I have never managed to break one and they have a huge range. My only reservation with Barnel is that they don't offer a saw with 'chainsaw pattern' teeth for use on polesaws on larger limbs.

Check out your local hardware store or farm supply store. Most of them will carry the Sandvik brand. I have bought several and they have all been great saws. Price is surprisingly low as well, usualy less than $20.00.

+1 on Sandvik - I've got a 42", 36" and 30" and they are good quality tools.

if anyone knows where to get 42" inch replacement blades, preferably Sandvik, I'd be mighty appreciative - thanks!
