Box cutters anyone?

Ever since I started carrying a blade, I carried a good ol' box cutter with it. Not those cheap, bright colored POS box cutters they give you to work with at a department store job, but a good folding one with a pocket clip and ease of opening Why? Because if I ever run into some cutting work I can abuse the blade on it without any worries of damaging it, all I have to do is replace the blade, especially if you carry a small pack of 10 spare blades wherever you go. The blades last as long as many of my mediocre folding knives, as long as I use the good ones such as IRWIN and LENOX GOLD blades. Any of you guys carry a box cutter along with you everyday? I've even seen 'Tactical' box cutters with glass breakers, fast deployment and other features.
My folder goes in my front right pocket and the box cutter on my back right, along with a pack of ten spare blades. If you ever think about carrying one, I recommend the Milwaukee Fastback, only costs 10 bucks at the hardware stores. Blue Loctite ALL the screws! It's nice and chunky and can take every day abuse flawlessly, also has switchblade speed opening, hence the name.

I just use my small sebbie.

but id imagine these you can lose and wouldn't mind.

maybe I should keep one in the freezer at work bevause I often have to open dozens of boxes jnside and cold frozen fingers dont like 2handed folders haha.

You're also not the first one to think of this.
If you are referring to the fact that this has been posted before I apologize i'm still getting familiar with the forum! :D

Why I have stones haha!

I just recently found out people cringe at the thought of cutting cardboard...
I save all my cardboard to specifically cut for fun, and test sharpness.

I make very wide angle cuts to see how wide I can get a cut to be, only very sharp knives can get a diagonal cut wide.

but anyways, knives were meant to be used and will get dull.
enjoy it.

No apologies needed but it was just an FYI. Just meant to say that it's been suggested before and a few people have tried it but in the end, this is a knife forum and a lot of people use their knives because they feel that they can get the value they paid for by using their knives as intended. :)

I feel like singularity35 does for I do use my my knives for all my chores. Cutting, skinning, whatever comes a long, they're there for that reason. Yes, the box cutter has it's place and I have several. But I use my EDC or one in my knife drawer for the job. I hope this has helped for I rarely use the box cutter now, but I do have 3 packs (100 pack) of blades and I keep two box cutters within reach in my Office, why? I don't know, one looks like one of my folders and the other one is one the has the button that ya slide and the bade is produced.

I use box cutters for cutting drywall and other chores where chipping and/or obliteration of the blade is inevitable. I have a folding one that stays on the truck that is fairly useful. They do seem to fall apart though, after some time.

OP, I am with you. I don't cut lots of cardboard, but I would get a simple box cutter if I did. They are simply more efficient at it than a thicker knife blade. The box cutters at work get abused; used for scraping, yet somehow manage to still cut cardboard.

I have carried the same one at work as a secondary for ~8 years. I don't know how the newer ones are made but mine is a tank. I use it for the same reason as others have stated, drywall holes, thin metal wall studs, pretty much half the jobs on the construction site that would, and have, destroyed, chipped, and snap my knife quickly. I'd post a picture of it but I don't know how. HAHAHA noob!

If you actually use a utility knife/box cutter, you learn that you need a long handle to keep your knuckles from hitting the floor or other surfaces. Those cute lock backs at Lowes and so forth are for people who really don't use one or use one once every few years.

But I do have a tiny utility knife, like 2.5" long closed that I have taken fishing.

I used to do this before I could sharpen to save the sending off of my knives. However, since I learned to sharpen I always use my knives because I don't worry about dulling them!

To post pics I make a flickr account and upload the pics there, then copy the image URL in the the Insert Image icon

I use a box cutter not just because they're ideal for cutting boxes or because I want to save the edge on my nicer knives--I mostly use them because they can get gunked up with tape residue and I don't care. If it happens with one of my knives I have to clean it all off. I actually resharpen my box cutter blades. Still on the the first side of the first blade out of the three that came with mine.

Another thing to add, you can touch up a blade in the time it takes to open and replace the blade in a utility knife, there's wins and loses but I prefer knives. :)
