When I moved from Montana to Hawaii 13 yrs ago I pulled almost all the wood hafts from the heads on axes, mauls, sledges, etc. I wrapped the heads in bubble wrap, put the heads in large USPS flat rate Priority boxes, taped the complete exterior of the box with HD packing tape. Then I bundled the hafts together and shipped USPS (cardboard boxes) Parcel Post.
Some of the flat rate Priority boxes with the heads arrived with somewhat of a round shape but everything was OK because of the complete packing tape exterior wrap. Many of the Priority box weight was 68/69 pounds (70 pound limit) One box was was exactly 70 lbs with a anvil that just fit the box. The boxes with the hafts took 8 wks to arrive because of shipping by Parcel Post.
The best part of this story is that the Post Master (women) and my wife wanted to know what the hell was I thinking. (But of course it was the cheapest way to get my tools to Hawaii !) They asked why I just did not sell my tools and buy new ones in Hawaii. I don't need to tell you guys the answer. The Post Master told me that this was not what the USPS had in mind when it started the flat rate Priority box program, but because they fit the box and only weighed a max of 70 lbs., it was legal. They both said "what is wrong with men, they send metal through the mail ?
