Here's a totally random question for you guys. Do you keep the boxes to your knives, or do they get thrown away. I was cleaning out my closet yesterday and threw away a ton of boxes that I had acumulated. I'm not really sure why I kept them in the first place to be honest.

I usually find that I keep 'em...but finding the right one can sometimes be an adventure...:p

(I think it really only matters if you're trying to sell a "pristine" knife to a collector to whom those details matter.)

I always keep the original boxes for my knives. It improves their resale value if you ever decide to deal one off, and also validates the authenticity of the knife itself (matching models, numbers, dating, etc.).

I toss 'em.

Just as soon as I get a new knife, I always threw away the box and then sharpened it to suit me. It got dropped in a pocket right then.

"Boxes? We don't need no steenkin boxes!"

I usually keep them, but throw some away if I know I'm going to use/carry that knife for a long time.

Heck, I save blister packs. Just kidding. :p

If it's for a "nicer" knife (say $75 or more) I might keep it, but generally not.

I keep them, for me its easier to put the knife back in its box and pick one out for its weekly rotation.

Usually they get kept, but this is a bit illogical. Some knives I just know I am never going to sell or swap yet I keep their boxes as well!

It depends on the quality of boxes too...Schatt, Queen, Canal St. and GEC all have very nice looking boxes-tubes, handsome some of them. CASE boxes are not in the same league and Böker ones are dull indeed.

I agree, I'm a lot more inclined to keep a nice box.

I keep everything. The box, any contents, wrapping, warranty cards etc. This unquestionably increases the value. Even if you know for sure you will never part with it your heirs may feel differently. You may not be willing to pay for those items but collectors are. I have the butcher paper and string that some of my early Randall's came in and it makes a huge difference in value. Especially for mint/unused pieces. There is a current tactical knife maker in great demand that people expect the plain white box, not even a sticker, the zip lock bag and the packing peanuts or the price will be downgraded. My advice after 40 years of collecting is keep it all forever. IMHO

If buying a new knife I always keep the original boxes and paperwork. With the knife in the box, naturally.

But many of my knives are older collectibles (Old Timers and others) that were previously owned and didn't come with the proper packaging. No big deal as long as the prices are discounted accordingly.

For users (yes I do sometimes buy a knife for using, about once every five years) I generally don't keep the boxes, but I offer them up to other collectors before I toss them.

That's what I do to, plus it helps protect the knives from "cabinet rash" and helps me store them properly. Some of mine didn't come with boxes as they were not new even if they were unused. So obviously those are just put in knife drawers. Some well used everyday knives are just put in the EDC drawer with other knives, but generally speaking if it came in a box, I keep it in the box.

Keep them for a spell to see if you are going to carry and resharpen knife you intend to EDC. Keep them for certain if you buy a really nice knife, that you may never sharpen.

Collectors pay more for MIB, Mint In Box. But keep all papers that came inside also.

I even have a couple of knives MIBP, Mint in Blister Packs........

You are either are or aren't a box person. Just don't be a wanna be box person. Your to late by then.

I'm with you!

Sounds like most keep them for trade purposes. That's part of the reason I trashed mine. It makes me less likely to trade or sell them, which is something I have trouble with. I just got my Northwoods indian river today, which does come with a nice box. I took it out, looked at it, and said, well, if I'm really planning on using this thing, I may as well ditch this box.

I keep the nice boxes (like the William Henry) but throw away the plain ones. Kept the GEC tubes. Boxes just take too much space and get damaged very quickly. But always keep the leather sheaths.
