Got an e-mail from Bro Yvsa this AM, and dutifully forwarded it on. It was a list of Chinese products that no one really needs, and could be done without right now. I've thought about this all day, and don't feel right about just sending it on to my mailing list, so:
Not usually a rabble rouser or protester, still, what happens if the kids wind up as scapegoats? What might get them out alive, better than all the good intentions of our able people, and the stammerings of our "usual" politicians? How about a massive, intentional, loud and continuing BOYCOTT!! If those of us, and those we know on other forums, and their follow-ups, were to e-mail the kown retailers enmasse, along with our worthy representatives in congress, and our limp-limbed media picked it up, we could swing a fairly big stick, I am thinking. Congress is hardly capable of stopping "favored nation" status for China on their own. Old Bill Clintoon opened that gate and too many dollars have poured through his holes in the dike to be stopped without a mandate. Can we give them one?? Any takers??

Everything I pick up in the stores says made in China. It poses a problem but if they don't let those sailors go very soon old Uncle Bill will go without rather than buying.

Just in case anybody doesn't know by now old Uncle Bill is an old tin can sailor, Korean War ear, is a hardhead, part Cherokee and part Italian, the worst possible combination, with a bunch of other stuff thrown in that makes him an extremist and an AMERICAN in every damned possible way.

Bill:
I've put this up on every forum/group I haunt in and so far yours is the only reply. If there are really that many people out there who can't do without, I'm way out there, away from where I ought I was. Hope they're spending their time sending out the word. Could be, I guess.

Great post Walosi and something I didnt think of.

And up 'till now I have tried to avoid goods from China without much success, but now I'm not going to buy anything from that country.

I think it was James Mattis that said China was the world's largest slave labor camp and he put his actions behind his words which is just another example of the sort of man James was, may James memory live on forever!!!!
And may we follow his actions in a good way!!!!

America could squeeze them if we wanted to.

They are far more reliant on our consumption of their goods than we are on their consumption of our goods.

Right now American businessmen are playing with their brains on this whole concept of "1.2 billion potential consumers..."

Greed and stupidity.

Well for quite a while I have been avoiding anything that says "made in China". What the Chinnnese are trying to do is rally support for their country, what better way to do that than have a bad guy?

Guess who that bad guy is gonna be. You got it. The US. I think that they are still peeved that we bomed thier embassy in the Chec republic. (Why did they need an embassy there anyway?)

Go without for as much as you can. Urge people that you know to do the same. Even after this does get resolved. Money, and lack thereof is a great motivator.

I don't buy chinese stuff anyway, because most of the time the quality of it is worse than horrible, whatever it is.

On the other hand, i don't see any problem in the whole case. These guys are military personel and get paid for taking the risk of getting caught or killed while on duty. In this special case the americans were the lucky guys, because it's been the chinese pilot who got killed. And there's no doubt that they will return to the USA sooner or later because of the tremendous economic pressure.

I agree, BOYCOTT !!!!! I do not need their stuff anyway. They can't stand up to the pressure in the long run anyway. This is just a stalling action on their part to try and steal as much technology off, of our aircraft as they can in a short time. They will return the US Sailors as soon as they feel they have gotten what they want and made their point. God protect our troops!

Achim,

I couldn't disagree more!
The chinese pilot in this case was at fault. He flew into a slower "lumbering propeller plane" with a high performance fighter jet. While the american plane was flying IN INTERNATIONAL WATERS!! Just because the Chinese have decided that the law that every other reasonable nation has agreed upon is not good enough, does not mean they have the right to harrass and crash into our planes. They had no right to be harrassing our plane at all. We have photographs taken by other planes of this particular pilot doing foolish and dangerous stunts like this (although luckily without colliding with anyone) in the past.
I am really offended by your attitude towards our military men and women. My father served in Korea and nearly died. It angers me to think that people would have sat on their asses and said "well he deserved to die cause he was in the military" if he had been killed or captured. If you work in a 7-11 you have an increased liklihood of being shot, because you put yourself in a place where bad people may choose to break the law(like the chinese did), but by no means do you deserve it, should you be shot by a crook.
I apologize to Uncle Bill and others here who come to this forum to avoid the very type of hostile posts that I am writing. I just felt that I needed to say what I said for every person fighting for our freedom, and putting their lives on the line so we can sit at our computers and talk, instead of waiting in a bread line, or working in a sweat shop.

I have received email from a Chinese friend so let me say that in most wars and almost all incidents such as the spy plane collision it is always always governments and seldom the real people who are to blame for the problems. My Chinese nephews remain just that and in no way do I hold them accountable for anything that has happened.

I remember WWII and had relatives who fought in it although I was still to young to enlist. Those who remember WWII and the terrible POW camps get very nervous when they see US servicemen held against their will in any situation. And, I am nervous.

I hope and I pray that this incident dries up quickly and sensibly and I pray for the welfare of the sailors involved.

I hate to take a different stance from you, my friends, but without apologizing or defending China's behavior, let me direct you to part of a short essay I wrote for my website-in-preparation, related to what we're talking about here -- boycotting China. It's at Section 4, titled "Where's Joe McCarthy When You Need Him? The Domino Theory of Sword Marketing":

http://weaponspage.homestead.com/disposingofmyths.html

(A word of warning to those who read the entire page: Since it's MY website, and nobody can kick me off it, I have voiced my opinions stronger than I do on forums such as this. Nothing offensive, just less charitable to the opposition.

Ruel this is the list that caused this thread to be started. I received it in an e-mail and passed it on as I thought it a good idea.
And the trade with China has impacted the area I live in with a couple of companies moving their manufactureing and assembly plants to China.
One company was Zebco a division of Brunswick. I have several Zebco rod and reels. The reels were largely manufactured in Tulsa and all the assembly work was done here.
I will Not buy any more Zebco products.
I don't see where it is the same thing as what you've written about, but sometimes I miss the point.

And I agree with Uncle Bill that it is the governments and not the people that cause the problems for us all. I believe if the people had more of a voice that there could be many good things result from that. There is no reason in my mind that anyone needs to be hungry or homeless or downtrodden in todays world and with todays technology.
It is all about governments and greedy, power seeking people.

Sailors held in China...what do you need thats made in China?

Do you need...
Nike Shoes..or Reeboks....do you have to be that cool?
The McDonalds Happy Meal Toy for your kid?
The shirt from Wal-Mart?
The purse from JC Pennys?
The yard rake from Lowes?
The sweeper from K-Mart?
The baseball glove from Dicks?
The pine scented car air freshener?
The US Army black berets?
The cheap sunglasses from the drug store?

The pack of plastic dinosaurs from Toys-r-Us?
The squeaky dog toy?
The pink lawn flamingo?
The cheesy BackStreet Boys or Nsync poster?
The indiglo watch?
The boxer shorts with garfield on them?
The official hat of your favorite sports team?
The WWF ciggarette lighter from Seven-11?
The shaded window blind for your side window?
The water bottle for your kids bike?
The "Billy the Big Mouth Bass"

You get the idea...what do you really need thats made in China? What do you really need that you cant find that is made in America or Taiwan...or any non Communist country?
24 Us Sailors are being held...and if they are released by the time you get
this, remember that they were still held by a communist country who has nuclear missiles pointed at American soil.
Think before you buy!!!

Pass this on please!!!

Ruel, I read your article about China through twice, and I have to say I (politely) totally disagree with it. Openning more trade ties with China will only make the communist government of that country stronger, as will increasing social services and standard of living through free trade. It is exactly opposite to the way the U.S. dealt with the Soviet Union, and it just won't work in the real world.

Raising the standard of living artificially through trade will only make it easier for the Chinese government to hide the problems inherent in a command economy. It won't increase meaningful dialogue or social change unless both parties act in good faith, and the gov. that massacred protestors in Tienenmen Square and sanctioned more genocide than Hitler and Stalin combined can't be trusted to act in good faith.

You should remember how little respect the Chinese gov. has shown for international law and goodwill before trying to treat them the way we might any other country. In international politics there are effectively only two ways to sway another country's policies; military force and economic action. Force is, of course, out of the question, so increasing trade ties with China would take away our only other policy tool.

Most importantly, I see a serious moral problem with increased trade with China. Since the communists took over that country, trade barriers have been the only way the international community has had to show that human rights abuses will not be tolerated. They have shown China that if it treats it's people as abominably as it does, it will not be allowed to participate equally in world affairs. Openning more trade ties would only tell the Chinese gov. that the international community is willing to overlook genocide and aggressive war against Tibet in exchange for a few McDonald's and K-Mart locations in Beijing. I for one don't think that is acceptable.

As for this recent incident, I think the sheer gall of the Chinese gov. affectively attacking a U.S. aircraft in international airspace, boarding that aircraft (a violation of international law), and then asking for an appology from our gov. is an outrage. Where's Ronnie when you need him?

I wrote a tirade last night and deleted it. But basically it said the chinese have bribed their way into influence in the house and senate. That the traitors who let themselves be bought should be subject to capital punishment at the nearest tree, and that we ought to end most favored nation status for china immediately, and then reasses after the airmen are freed. Reasses and make it permanet.

Rusty:
I totally agree with you on the subject of our home-grown sellouts who went to the trough with the Clintoons. A politician who accepts foreign money no longer has the appearance of integrity, and when the money is from an unfriendly nation, it is tantamount to treason. I cannot agree with you on the use of trees, however. As they did in Mexico, we should use telephone poles. They are close to the road, reducing logistical problems,(we may need a lot of them) and more public, thereby aiding in the communication of the sentiment expressed. Also, hanging them from trees can really screw up plans for Sunday picnics

Gentlemen, I cannot remember the exact quote, but if I remember correctly a great General of WWII once said something to the extent of,
"...no bastard does a damn thing for his country by dieing for it...you only make a difference when you kill the other poor bastard on the other side."
We should not sit around and wait for these men to come back in boxes. We need to do something now. Force a conclusion to this soap opra.

In a previous century this would be enough to start a war. Why are we sitting around whineing like children when we should be writeing our senators?

By the way I am awaiting the arrival of a 20" Kobra, what do you guys have to say about it? It will be my first HI Kuk.
