Hi Hi,

I'm not a maker but I have question about Boye's Dendritic steel.

Is it difficult to work with? Are there any makers that can put handles on a blank if I got my hands on one or two? They come pretty much finished up as far as I can tell.

Pic attached.

I believe that's dendritic 440c. Annealed 440c in it's regular form is very nice to work with, I'm not sure about the cast stuff. The gentleman that sells the cast knives is in Eugene each year, I forget his name. They appear to be well made. Have you thought about finishing your own knife? Go to Engnath on the Web and learn how.

Although I would enjoy the task of finishing a knife I wouldn't have the time or the materials & equipment to do so. I am willing to pay for someone to do it for me.

As far as I am aware of, these are cast blanks.

Would anyone think these blanks are worth $30.00 each?
I like how Talonite slices so I gather I would like this steel too.

contact boyle and buy one already finished. most makers dont want to put handles on other peoples knives. there might be a hobbyist that will do it.

Ah! I learn something new everyday. What you guys have said certainly makes complete sense. I wish there was a better way. I'm more than willing to try myself but I have no tools or materials.

I will see what Boye can do for me.

Thanks for the feedback!

Cheers!

Thanks for the info.
I just learned that the blanks are not heat treated so that's another step. I think this is getting too complicated for me.

Thanks for the feedback!

Burton,

Here is a link to some of David Boye Dendritic knives, completed. http://www.francineetchings.com Francine sends these cast blanks are sent to a knife maker that she knows and he heat treats, grinds and places handles on these knives for her. This knife maker will not place his name on any of these knives. I beleive, because they are not of his design and was not 100 percent hand crafted by him.

Intermountain Precision Casting foundry
cast his blades, at least up to the last time I mailed Debbie Boye
(his wife) about his web site and casting blades...
