I just came across what appears to be a 3 phase blanchard grinder made by Boyer Schultz (Chicago). Everything is in great shape (cross slide smooth, runs great, etc.) The place bought out a machine shop and haven't priced it yet. The owner was thinking $500-600. Does this sound like a good deal?
 
Yes, sounds good

See if you can get them to run it and it has a magnetic chuck.

See what else they throw in, wheels, diamond dresser and holder, sine plate, whatever you can get is all gravy.


Feed it power with a VFD, or converter rather than changing the motor.
Apparently the original motors are specific and balanced.
 
Boyer Schultz is a good company. First a blanchard grinder is not quite the same as a surface grinder. If it will do what you are looking for then great. If not it will be an expensive piece of iron. Had the chance to get a blanchard a few years ago for really cheap buuuutttt it was so big it would have taken up most of my shop and it is not quite as accurate as a good old single wheel surface grinder. But there again like the count said if it is in good working order and has a mag chuck then it might just be what you are looking for.

please note, blanchard grinding is accurate to .001 while surface grinding can be accurate to less than .0001
 
I and another knifemaking friend both have Boyar-Schultz grinders. I converted mine to belts years ago and have found it to be a very important part of my shop. Before converting to belts, mine with a chuck cost $500 about eight years ago, so it seems like a fair price.
 
Its only a good deal if it comes with a magnetic chuck IMO. last chuck I bought cost me twice what the machine did.

Yea they are good machines I have that brand....just make sure it has the original 3 phase motor, mine came with a 110v and it is week, I have the original that I am going to reinstall....
