Boy's first time knife - fixed blade

Marttiinis are better than Mora knives, though I like both. Get him a rubber-gripped Marttiiini Condor, around $20. The rubber-gripped Marttiinis have excellent sheaths and overall safety.

If you go with a SAK, I second the Victorinox Farmer but also like the Hiker.

Becker BK14 is what I have given my 12 yo and one of his friends in Scouts at the same age is getting one as well. Great knives for the money!

Mora or other Scaninavian-style knife is a good choice. Perhaps look for a "youth" or "Scout" models that have guards; a #39 has guards, wood handle, and leather sheath for under $25. For a tighter budget the #601 has guards, painted wood handle, and a plastic sheath for $13. Mora is probably the least expensive, but other brands are in your price range too. As mentioned, Marttiini is a big higher quality but still in the $25 range for a wood handle Lynx model. Helle quality is excellent, and the basic models are still in your price range.

AG Russell Woodswalker is about $20 with a leather pocket sheath. Nice little set for the money.

Not sure the current prices, but the Buck Woodsman and Pathfinder are very durable and come with secure leather sheaths.

Good luck deciding!

Another good one is the Bucklite Max, orange rubber grip, for about $30. The black grip model is usually cheaper.

Mora 511. It has a finger guard and costs very little. That way when he drops it overboard you can pull out the spare and still be under $20!

Thanks guys, I'm not really familliar with this budget price range so thats why I asked... The mora's look like a good choice. I agree stainless is a must to help him succeed. :D And also something easy to sharpen.

I really think the Mora hits all the points :) I'll have to track them down. :)

Buy him something 'loseable' that can easily be replaced for reasonable cost. A good Mora, or a Buck 119 come to mind. A bigger knife is less likely to get lost, and they have large handles for a good grip for young inexperienced hands.

As many have said get a mora. I would
Go with the mora campaign because if has the rubbery grip so of its wet it won't be slippery. And get carbon to teach him how important it is to take care of your blade (:
