Perfect for a 6 year old woodsman :)

Victorinox, My first Knife.

In respect to the Vic SAK... My son and I just did a Cub Scout knife/woodworking project that required a bar of soap and a folder. The BSA prohibits fixed blades so we used his SAK - a gift from his grandparents; now we have soap all over the SAK -- considerably harder to clean and way more expensive than his Mora Scout. Also, to watch the kids fold the blades without cutting themselves without injury made me more nervous than the more "serious" fixed blade Mora. Additionally, the Mora fits the hand better. I guess my point to those considering such things is to get both : )

I made my 6 year old son a 3" Scandinavian blank (Karesuando) and shaped a finger guard in the handle assembly. I sized the diameter down, and he handles it well, mostly for whittling, opening packages, and slicing food. SAK by age 7..Didn't we all close our first folder on a finger?:)

These are all perfect for kids starter kits.
Good quality, decent prices, and classic styles.

Vaughan Sportsman's Axe (8 ounce head, and a handle small enough for kids. My dad gave me two at that age, and I still have them.)

An Opinel maybe? A Becker BK 14 fits my grandson's hand pretty well too.

Many great ideas and feedback. Fun pics of the young adventurers too.

My daughters were using small wood handled Moras and Mouse sized hawks by 6, although they were going to rendezvous with us and were exposed to these kinds of tools all the time. Food prep really helps so much, IMO, with safe blade experience. They are 18 and 23 now and happily have all of their digits. :)
When my sister-sons turned 6-ish one got a Mora Clipper and a SAK Farmer and did very well over the years. The youngest, who seemed more accident prone got the SAK with the rounded tip. He did fine, yet when we all camped or woodswalked he kept asking to borrow one of my pointier SAK's or folders for his woods projects. So quickly I gave him a few others more pointy.

Time and attention on safe and proper tool use and that seems to be the key.

When I asked my wife what she thinks are very important items in a young adventurers haversack, she replied,"A whistle, a flashlight, a knife, something to mark his path, wool socks and a small blanket."...

Have fun and take care,
Mark

A 3 year old thread recommending a knife to someone who hasn't been on the site for about a year...okay.:D Mora 137. The handle is smaller then the normal mora.

I actually miss PR. Too many people take things too seriously, and he was funny. I mean, come, who wasn't amused by him?
