Bradley Cutlery?

BUck 172 is cheaper and better then an Alias, IMO.

Cheaper: yes, you can get it around 185USD.
Better: it depends on meant use ;)
Buck's blade style it's not properly the best one for many demanding applications....(piercing and those asking for some side loading among others).
But I do acknowledge that its cost/performance ratio is damn good :)

Aside from this forum, of course;) Allow me to introduce myself as Peter from Houston (a native suffering under the annual heatwave). I've had a small collection of mainly production quality knives for the past 20-25 years. Lately, I find myself reinterested in blades. After 8 years of relying soley on firearms (ccl) for pp, I found myself doing quite a bit of walking around downtown for my job as a construction super for highrise buildouts. I unretired my old Buck Crosslock, but after I started surfing the web for a new blade, I kind of got the bug for blades again. I started out with a Boker Gemini Skipper. This forum, combined with the article above convinced me to order a Bradley Alias I as an everyday carry blade. Since the Bradley is more knife than I care to damage with dirty work, I had to order a SOD EOD multi tool. Lastly, I just couldn't resist a Boker Applegate @ $78.-Somebody STOP me please!:o

I'd like to welcome you by pointing out that this is the worst site on the net for knife addiction recovery!

Thanks,
Fortunately (for my finances), my wife is aware of the problem and may begin counter measures soon....Haven't handled any of these blades yet except for the Gemini-any feedback appreciated. Consideing a SOG Tech bowie for my next purchase (excepting strong nuptual resistance:grumpy: )

The blade-to-handle ratio on the large Alias sucks. Do you not agree?

I hope not. Compared to the average member here, I have to admit I'm a complete nimrod. I made the purchase base on the positive/lack of too much negative FB. Positive AND necative comments are certainly welcome. I can't really share my impression, as I haven't handled the piece yet. Then again, the Boker Gemini I recieved seems to have a good feel to me, compared with my limited experience starting woth a Buck 110 in 1977. I'm sensing knives/steel have come a very long way since then.

The Alias (Bradley's) series are nice knives, but despite what Bradley's ad copy would have you believe, Sebenza-worthy they ARE NOT. Bradley's (Benchmade's) heat treat and finish of S30V is nowhere near Chris Reeve's. Just look at the number of posts about "chipping" issues involving BMs. CRK pretty much pioneered the use of S30V in production knives. Afterall, Crucible and Chris Reeve worked hand in hand in test-driving S30V.

The Alias series, AFAIK, does NOT have a heat treated Ti lock-face, to minimize wear that could affect lock-up. The Sebenza DOES have a heat treated Ti lock-face. The Sebenza's frame-lock should take a lot longer to show signs of wear.

The Sebenza sports a pivot-bushing, the Alias does not. The Sebenza's frame-lock appears to have a bigger contact area than the Alias, and it appears to be shaped more functionally (not rounded like the Alias's). The frame-lock was also pioneered by Chris Reeve, so I think his company has gotten it down pat over the last 15 or so years. Benchmade (who manufactures the Bradely Alias) is fairly new to frame-locks, and didn't have too much success with their first attempt (the 750 Pinacle).

All in all, this is an "apples to oranges" comparison. Not to say the Bradely Alias isn't a good, perhaps even great knife. It just ain't no Sebenza! I do, however, tend to see the Benchmade 635 Mini-Skirmish as a better value for the money than the Bradely Alias. YMMV.

Thanks everybody, I ended up buying a Large Sebenza w/micarta inlay, and my newest purchase is a small sebenza and I definately have no regrets.

DaveH, didn't the one I put in the passaround last year have problems after a few weeks of use? I thought it was ok for the 2 weeks I owned it, but I think time told on that knife. If it is any consolation I never bought another one.

Oh for the love of god. Settle down children. I own a custom sebbie and i love it. It is a dman near perfect design. But it cost me 750 dolalrs. If it is 200 bucks of course it isnt going to be a sebenza. The only knife that is comparable is the Lochsa. That being said. why do people still argue this. I agree that the sebenza is one of the best knives on earth. But if you want a good kniffe that isnt as exepensive but is the same general idea, then by all means get an alias. I have never heard ill of it. Im sure you will be very happy with it, and then one day you might step up to the sebbie.

thanks for clearing up that whole Bradley not beeing chris reeve thing.
with any luck, spyderco's aren't benchmade's either.

Glad you're happy with your purchases, shark tooth. I really like those micarta inlayed Sebbies.:)

My alias has become loose in the torx bolts. I tightened them over and over. Now I got a loose knife and some stripped bolts. Lets see how good the waranty is!
