A friend of mine has a young daughter that went through the same thing about a year ago. They discovered it when she started to loose her balance and vomit for no apparent reason. The tumor was about the size of a tennis ball.

She had the surgery and was nearly back to normal in a month, she's just fine now.

Hopefully your friend has something similar because he should be able to bounce back easily.
