Guys,
I just had to tell you about a new product. It's a new magnesium/ferrocerium rod combined into one. Instead of just shaving off magnesium and then sparking the other side to ignite the magnesium, with this rod it's done in one operation. You get a hot shower of sparks that continue to burn in your tinder. Wow. Not only that but they are made here in New Yrok and a real good guy is carrying them. Camping survival.com
here is the link to his site.

Brian,
I hope you don't mind me advertising this product for someone else but I think it is newsworthy. I will have some with me at the CT Gathering for guys to try out.

Whoa, that is wild! I'm gonna need one of those for sure. Thanks for the link!

That is really interesting, I'm excited to see the reviews vs. a normal Army firesteel. Having a few more seconds worth of sparks would be nice.

That looks awsome. I will have to order one soon. Thanks for the tip.

Great concept! I'm always looking for the "perfect" firestarter and this definitely seems like it would be worth a try.

Thanks for posting.....

Very cool, I just lit my first "fire steel fire'' a few days ago. I might have to pick one up once my fire steel gets worn all the way down.

Marty, I love hearing about new products, and you can post whatever you damn well please here as far as I'm concerned, as long as you keep on posting here! :)

I got it and I wasn't that impressed I am afraid. Maybe it's the striker that I don't like more than the rod itself, as the rod is fine and does appear to throw a hotter spark.

I guess I am used to a piece of hacksaw blade and really throwing sparks with direction and force as I pin down my tinder most of the time. Just an fyi - if you use this as it is intended, with the cap as the striker, and you are one of those who has used a hacksaw blade with a ferro rod, you may have the same sentiments as me.

Actually, ferrocerium, according to sources I have read online, already contains magnesium. Also, the "flint" rod in both the Aitor JKII and Brewer Explorer knives from the 80s and a US Military Survival Kit that I have owned and bought second-hand have all disintegrated to dust as if they had a very high magnesium content as well. If someone can get the original source for a ferrocerium rod, they could specify that there is more magnesium in it. I don't really think this is necessarily anything new.

They work though! :)
