Brand new knife making noise?

I just received an order from a knife company yesterday (I'll leave their name out to avoid any potential issues or marketing), and 1 of the 3 knives was a Kershaw Nura 3.5". It was the only box of the 3 that was crushed during shipping, and upon opening the box, there were some markings and discoloration on the handle around the pivot, and what appears to be a light layer of dirt/dust inside of the knife. The worst of all, in the open or closed position it makes a clicking sound when the knife is moved around. To the point that I feel like even if it was in my pocket and just simply walking would make it make the clicking sound. I almost think that one of the ball bearings in the pivot is too small or broken or something and clanging around inside, but I don't know. Is this sound normal on brand new cheaper IKBS pivots? Or should I attempt a refund? Almost seems like it was a return from someone else considering the markings and debris on the inside.

::EDIT::

Decided to take the knife apart and fix the issues that I had figured out from this thread, details are listed on post #19 here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ew-knife-making-noise?p=16552031#post16552031

Then I'll have to pay to ship it back, and possibly get hit with a 5% restocking fee, which means I'd lose $6 or more on a ~$24 purchase. It's a bit of a catch 22.

Can you isolate where the clicking is coming from? Is it around the pivot area? Sometimes a pocket click will make the sound, but that is usually very easy to distinguish and fix. Or something loose around the pivot area? Try and figure out exactly where, if possible.

It's around the pivot area I believe, it's definitely not the pocket clip since small movements make the rattling/clicking sound. I'm half tempted to open it up and see if I can fix it myself, but then I definitely wouldn't be able to return it

I'd contact the retailer who sold it to you and tell them about the problem. Before you disassemble or ship back on your dollar, give them a chance to make it right. I've found if you expect great customer service, you tend to get it more often than if you expect bad customer service.

The Nura in particular was a knife that I had a lot of hope for, but my particular specimen never worked out. The blade kept going off center and the the pocket clip began to spin with only a little bit of torque. Mine arrived new with uneven markings on the scales also. Kershaw seems to be a little hit or miss lately on QC for the China produced models.

Could be just the torsion bar.
Happened to one of my ZTs. All it needed was some grease.

Bingo, I think Jens Schuetz nailed it. I've had "rattling" torsion bars before. One was even on a ZT...

I agree about Kershaw, never been a big KAI/Kershaw fan, nor a Chinese folder fan (or Chinese anything in general) but Dmitry Sinkevich's ZT 0450 is one of my favorite knives ever, and I figured I'd give his kershaw nura a try since it was similar in shape and size to the 0450, and only $24-$25.

Yup. No torsion bar. That would normally be the issue but not if there is no torsion bar. OP, if the package was damaged the company should take the knife back paying shipping and not charging a fee. Any decent company will do this as until the purchase gets to you safely the knife is theirs. It didn't get to you safely. That is on them. I know you said you didn't want to name the company but knowing who it is could help in advising you in this situation.

I figured out where the noise is coming from, the standoff in the middle of the knife, it serves zero purpose since it's not screwed in at all, it's just....sat in there. Very poor design choice, I'm debating super gluing one side down to the lockbar scale so it stops rattling, and I'll still be able to take the knife apart.

Before I did anything to the knife, I'd talk to the retailer first. Now that you know where the problem is, they may simply replace it as a defective example. If you start messing with it, they may not since they wouldn't know for certain if your tinkering caused the damage.

Mine was the same.
Hated it, sorry but it was full of problems and issues, I got rid of it after a year, too much time waiting...

I believe it'll be my last Kershaw, TBH. Not smoth either, my first experience with IKBS, very disappointing.

This is my Nura, it works fine, the blade is perfectly centered, very smooth to open and close.. You can disassemble the knife, is very simple, just 2 torx screws and inside you will find only the blade and the ball bearing, check them and see if you resolve the noise problem..
Best regards..

I would call the retailer. For us we would either send you a shipping label for return or refund your shipping cost once the knife comes back.

Exactly. This is what a quality knife shop would do....

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all of the responses. Based on all of the feedback I decided to take the knife apart after learning that it was the standoff in the middle of the knife making noise, and super glue said standoff to the lockbar side scale.

I deduced that this could potentially be a problem with any and all Nura's since it takes extremely tight tolerances to make a loose component tight and flush, the kind of tolerances that you'd need for a $200+ knife, not a $25 knife. It also seems that centering and smoothness have been issues for some Nura owners, again due to tolerances, and I happen to have a very smooth and perfectly centered copy. Based on that, I figured it was best to suck it up and fix the problems with mine instead of attempting to return it and possibly having new and worse problems, rinse and repeat.
