Just found the forum yesterday and has answered many questions! However it's given me even more questions to ask!
I need a recommendation on a good hiking/ survival knife to use on some hiking/camping trips this fall. I own a couple of older buck fixed blades but looking for something a little larger/newer. I guess my criteria are as follows of course suggestions may arise that i havn't thought of.
1. Larger side of things-6.5'' blade or larger
2. Durablility- Some chopping/camp work ability
3. Looks- Not wanting a pretty wall ornament/ or a wacky custom fantasy.
4. Price- Preferrably under 125$ Could go more if "wowed"

I think the closest knives i've found so far is the Cold Steel Recon Scout/Trailmaster knives- like the looks of them. I have tons of spyderco/ benchmade/microtechs and the such i collected 4+ years ago, looking for a "lifetime" knife that's going to take some use and abuse!

Again look around the custom for sale section......you can find something wonderful....useful and handmade. Do some serious research yourself.....you might be surprised what this place has to offer.....oh and welcome to the forum! :)

Welcome to the forums!

I've read a lot of good things about the Rat Cutlery RC-6. Spend a few mins in the RAT forums...

Same with Bark River Knife n Tool, although not sure how much is available at that price range.

I've had great luck with a good ole fashioned, full size Kabar w/ Kraton Handles. I've beat the heck out my two (1 full size, 1 shorter version).

I haven't owned one, but I've heard good things about the Recon Scout and Trailmaster . The new ones are SK-5, and many people say they are just as good as the old Carbon V models.

Ranger's RD knives can be had in your price range. KaBar is going to be making the Becker line soon.

Scrapyard knives are good, but the Scrapper 6 is under the size you want, and you're going to be hard-pressed to find one under $125 right now.

I actually have an old nighthawk, not too fond of the rubber handle on it and I'm kind of leaning towards something a little larger. The Scrapyard is nice, but not sure of the all around "toughness" of the handle. Like the look of slab style handle with a full tang. I realise the Recon won't give this too me, but it was the closest thing i had found. I think the RAT knives look nice too, can't find anything in the size i'm looking for... ugh!.

The Fallkniven A1 I believe will meet your needs. Price is about $20 higher than you wanted, and the blade 0.2" shorter than your minimum, tho.

I went through this a year or so ago, and that's the knife I settled on. If you search I believe you'll find plenty of testimony as to its worthiness.

RC-6 will be available very soon (this month) and is about $10 above your price range. There are lots of custom makers that can, believe it or not, do something for you at that price or very similar to it.

Check of koyote knives (Search Knives by Christof on google).
Consider Landi Knives (Search Landi Knives on google) for his XPS series.

Here is my Breeden Peacemaker model from Bryan Breeden (goes by the name of Sicily02 on bladeforums). It is 6", 1/8" thick O1 and meets your price and its companion - the KAT knife both on osage orange. I'm truly enjoying this one:

Fallkniven A1, get it with the zytel sheath.
Then for christmas you wish for a Fallkniven PXL to go with it.
Then you buy yourself an F1 and a U2 and an H1 and then you are stuck :)

anybody have any experience with the ka-bar heavy bowie 1276? it seems like it might be pretty decent, im in the same situation and looking for a fixed blade with at least a 6 or 7 in blade.

The Scrapyard is nice, but not sure of the all around "toughness" of the handle.

A suggestion for you, whatever blade you do choose, get something with a good Lifetime warranty (from a reputable company/maker) any product/anything can have it's problems, you want to be covered and knowing a company will replace it for just about any reason is assurance they make something good.

SY handles are more than tough enough, this is from their site:
"Resiprene C was made famous as a handle material when it was used on the Busse Combat Basics. Respirene C, these handles have all the advantages of rubber handles without any of the disadvantages. They are comfortable, shock absorbing, slip resistant when wet, and provide insulation from the cold. Unlike Kraton, Resiprene C is a Non-hygroscopic material which means that it will neither "take on" or "emit" fluids. This quality not only gives them unparalleled durability but makes them extremely easy to keep clean as dirt will simply not stick to them. It is impervious to salt water, petroleum based chemicals and is much more resistant to higher and colder temps than is Kraton. Resiprene C is likewise impervious to the powerful insect repellant, DEET. It is so amazingly tough and durable that Busse stands as the only company to have ever put a Lifetime Guarantee on a rubber handle."

If your going to be chopping/batoning really using your blade, Res-C handles absorb a lot of the impact shock, way better than other harder materials.

Also their are sites that show toughness of various blades, if anything they are entertaining and give you a rough idea as some of the things various blades can take.
Good Luck and welcome to BF.

Like all the Busse Kin knives, Scrap Yard offers a 100% guarantee that's good for the life of the knife, no matter who owns it.

If you want something larger than the Scrapper 6, consider the Yard Hook or Yard Guard, both of which have 7" blades. They are also probably easier to come by on the exchange.

Thank you so far for the suggestions. From what i can tell i like the products from BRKT but having a hard time finding one (for sale) in the size i want. I don't see really anything with over a 6'' blade. I like the RAT cutlery knives (RC-6) as well, but seem as they're out of stock? Or maybe an even larger one is about to be released?
So far the best thing to fit the bill is a Scrap Yard Yard Guard. Can someone fill me on a little more information on these guys. I read through the website and remember the Busse knife company from years ago but i've been out of the loop for quite sometime.
Seems like Busse is not really in business anymore? Weird website lingo i guess!
I still really like the CS Recon Scout, but seem as though it isn't as "cutting edge" as some others out there and i've read the handles on the CS aren't up to being a "lifetime knife". I suppose the Res-C is better according to the website material.
Just wish i had a little more opinions on the Scrap Yard company. Which one would you go for for? I kinda need an all around camp knife.. but something that can chop small saplings... emergency survival knife.. etc.
Thanks again.
