Brand New!- Need fixed blade!

Based on your criteria, I like my Busse's, Swamp Rats, and Cold Steels. I've got both the Trailmaster and Recon Scout, and have never had a problem with handles. I'd check out the product offerings and for sale forums for Busse and Swamp Rat. Lots of good stuff out there. Check out Fehrman knives also.

Yard Guard:
Overall length: 12”
Blade length: 7” (re-curved blade)
Thickness: approximately .280 (1/4” – 5/16”)

Okay, so can you still buy these Scrap yard " yard guards" new or are they only used models. It seems when i find them for sale.. they're a lot more than what i see msrp being on the website.
Also, can someone describe the feel of the handle on the SY knives. I own an old buck nighthawk. I also know what a Trailmaster Kraton handle feels like. I'm not a big fan of either and prefer the micarta/ riveted handles of the busse knives but they all appear to be way out of my price range. I can go over 125$, but not triple that.

you can only get the Yard Guards in the secondary market, both used and new.
the handle feels like hard, palm filling, non-slip rubber.
warm and cozy! :p

RC-6 will be available very soon (this month) and is about $10 above your price range. There are lots of custom makers that can, believe it or not, do something for you at that price or very similar to it.

Check of koyote knives (Search Knives by Christof on google).
Consider Landi Knives (Search Landi Knives on google) for his XPS series.

Here is my Breeden Peacemaker model from Bryan Breeden (goes by the name of Sicily02 on bladeforums). It is 6", 1/8" thick O1 and meets your price and its companion - the KAT knife both on osage orange. I'm truly enjoying this one:

I am going to second this. Also have a Peacemaker from Bryan and it is an excellent knife. Bryan is very good to work with as well, and will have your knife made and sent to you in a very reasonable amount of time. His prices are also very good, well within your price range. The Peacemaker is an excellent all-around camp knife, I recommend one. Or, if you're feeling adventurous, shoot Bryan a drawing of your ideal knife and he'll make it up for you.

Fallkniven, RAT Cutlery, and Gryphon M35 are all good bets and would meet your needs...

Regards,
Mike

why are these Busse kin knives only available on the resale market and not from a retailer. Two of the things i've discovered that lend me in that direction are the guarentee they offer, and i really like the idea of a very thick blade for some asthetics of it alone.
Are the Busse kin knives not being manufacured anymore.
The RAT knives appear to have blades on the thinner side of things.
I think the BRKT knives are a little too "pretty" for what i'm really looking for, though one of their smaller models may be purchased in the future for a back in my pack.
So far I like the look of the fehrman knives and the Scrap yard.. just not sure why i can't by them from a retailer.

All of the Bark River line can be purchased with plain micarta handles, so there's no need to buy a pretty one. The company also has an incredible warranty which basically states that unless a badger damages your knife, it will be fixed or replaced. Further, they will refurb your knife if necessary.

Let me just warn you not to buy into the 'thick' hype too fully. You'll end up with a lot of heavy metal sitting in a drawer somewhere - because after a while you start to hate all that weight that isn't very good at cutting anything. All the 1/4" steel I've bought in the past doesn't really do much but collects dust.

As far as I'm concerned, 3/16" is bullet proof enough for anything you would really use a knife for. So don't let that stop you from considering a rat cutlery (not rat ontario) knife. The ratcutlery guys offer a 'no-questions asked' lifetime guarantee. Plus you should look into the history of Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin. They started their company as a survival school and got into designing knives to meet their own demands in the jungle. True, they are knife designers, not makers but as users they have a wealth of experience to know what is sufficient in knife design. In fact, do yourself a favor and ask them about it on their sub-forum and they will be happy to answer your questions. Thats just the kind of friendly attitude they take over there.

Personally though I'm now of the opinion that even 3/16" is too thick for a knife of 6" length or shorter. 1/8" seems about perfect - gets very sharp, remains light and is really tough. Thin is in - its just taking the production world a long take to figure that out.

Bark river are one of the few companies that do thick right - that is because they use full convex designs that result in a very acute edge despite having a thick spine.

best answer I can give; Supply and demand. They are very popular.

Okay, so maybe i need a new thread. After looking at everyone's ideas, and reading tons of threads here on the forum, I think my original question has changed a little bit.
I gave a lot of criteria for a knife, but none of it included specific functions and now after thinking one thing-and typing another.... i have a better description of what i'm looking for.
I guess i need a larger than previously thought knife. I plan on overnight hiking trips with a SAK and a one hander(spyderco probably)... i already own lots of both but only two smaller fixed blades.
I guess i'm looking for a fixed blade on the larger side of things. After reading several threads on here it seems as though something in the 8-10'' blade is going to do exactly what i need... chopping, slicing... like a short machete, make shift hatchet, general camp knife for food, baton work, and my largest knife for self defense.
So far from reading other threads and suggestions here on this one, it appears that to stay in my price range.... originally 125$... +/- a little... a Dog father, a RTAKII, or a Ranger 9''? .. possibly the Becker 9'' knife of similar looks (forgot name) are all around what i'm looking for.
I think 7'' is on the small side, and anything over 10'' is going to be a burden.
Any experience with these? or others of similar size/price?
Also, i really prefer something in current production and not previously owned.

7" is a little on the small side if you plan on doing much chopping or anything like that with it. I bought a BK7 a while back, and while I love the knife, I wish I would have bought the BK9 instead.

The Becker line of knives are awesome knives for the money, and I would highly recommend them.

If you want something that chops like a machete in a shorter thicker package then you gotta check out a Himalayan Imports Khukuri, they are right at your price range and chop like nobody's business. HI also stands behind their products with amazing warranties. they have a board here on the manufacturer forums with lots of pics and honest testamonials, you should check them out.

Have you checked out any custom knives? You might like the Monster Nessie with an 8.50" blade made by Daniel Koster. They start at $245 but they will last you forever. He has a section under the "makers" forum:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=813

His website is at: http://www.kosterknives.com. Check out the gallery and click on "Nessmuk". The Monster Nessie is near the bottom of that page. Here is one of many Monster Nessie knives (you can choose many options for your knife):

Far more experienced people on these boards than I have recommended
the rule of 3 as a minimum. Small, medium and large.
For example; a folder of some kind, a 5" fixed blade and an axe;
a Becker Necker, a BRKT Bravo 1 and a Fiskars Hatchet;
a Leatherman multi tool, a Koster Bushcraft and a Becker BK9....

A Becker BK9, Koster Monster Nessie, NWA Camp Knife, Swamp Rat
Ratweiler and Chopweiler, Scrapyard DogFather are knives that come to
mind. Should be able to find them on the exchange.

Justin's Ranger 9's have a good reputation although I've never owned one.
Any Bussekin product. Watch the exchange for any deals.
Bussekin releases usually are a 1 of run. They will do a release, then stop
production of that model and not make anymore. If you miss on a company
release, then you have to go to the secondary market to purchase your
knife. If you're interested in getting new releases from their companies,
watch each company website, and pay attention to the forums that they
have on here. Scrapyard and Swamprat have their own forums as well
linked from their websites.

I think 7'' is on the small side, and anything over 10'' is going to be a burden.

Don't think that 7" is on the small side. I have a Swamprat Ratweiler (not
Chopweiler), a Scrapper 6 and a Fallkniven A1. All are around the 7"
range, and will do pretty much everything that you want to do. If you
can't chop through something with them, then you can baton the knives
through. They are extremely tough knives and can handle A LOT OF
ABUSE.

Cheers
Dave

Looks like the RTAK II is my best bet for what's available. I'd like to purchase within the month and i really would like to buy from a retailer/manufacturer. Is there anything i'm overlooking by going cheaper with a Becker, of perhaps i should spend more and wait for a scrap yard or swamp rat. I think those are my favorites as of now. Just wondering what am i getting for the added price.
Any idea when the Bussekin knives will be released again?
