I am looking for my first edc for hiking, camping, general bad assedness, etc. . . Does any one have specific suggestions?

Looking for a blade between 3-4 inches
good blade material that holds an edge for a long time
light
black
around $60

and any personal input/opinions on combo blades?
g10 handles?
154c material?
anything?

Thanks.

the kershaw skyline, non AO, and the kershaw pack rat, AO, are my 2 favorite EDC's. i also carry a spyderco pacific salt for work, and it it large, but very thin and light. it would be a great edc if you work on spend alot of time around water.
the skyline is about 35.00, packrat, 45-55$, and the pacific salt is 60-70$. the 2 kershaws have g10 scales, i love it. the spyderco has a FRN handle, with is tough as nails and is super lite.

I usually carry a Kershaw RAM, customized with ironwood scales and a Hawk Grip Clip. Fast flipper, solid lock, and good blade shape/size. It's almost the perfect knife. The stock RAM is close to your budget.

I prefer wood handles, but I also like the feel of G10 and micarta. I'm not a fan of FRN, but it's very light and durable.

I'd say get a plain edge and get good at sharpening it. If you're cutting a lot of rope or something, you can get a specialized serrated blade later.

Benchmade Griptilian or Presidio Ultra... Fullsize or mini in either design depends on your size preference... both can be had near, if not under, your price range. I think plain edge knives are more useful.

+1 I would also recommed the RAM, opens fast, I really like the blade shape, and you can find it for a little over $55 I believe.

Spyderco Endura 4
Delica 4
BM Griptilian or Mini-Grip

These are a few carried on my hikes, nature walks, etc and they all performed great. The E4 is one I carry as EDC most often (it's on break while I try out others now).

G-10 is great for outdoors use, can be used wet, cold, hot, and stiil maintain some grippiness IMHO. One cheap but good alternative that includes G-10, for a low pric, is the Byrd Cara Cara. Despite the pice, you'll be surprised at how well it performs.

A combo blade is your own preference. For me, I tend to use plain edges; can be sharpened with a rock easier tham serrated edges on a hike. I tend to use them exclusively and have had no issues.

Hope this helps.

Benchmade Griptilian :-)

and i'd go for a plain edge. serrations are handy, but if you've only got 3-4" of blade, i wouldn't spend any of it on teeth.

I think the mini griptilian has the best quality at 60 bucks. I suggest PE satin with a blue handle.

don't rule out a fixed blade. not trying to get you side tracked or anything, but (with the right sheath) they can be used in the woods or in town equally well. they're ez to clean, quick to deploy, stronger, etc.

i carry a FB with a 4.5" blade. it comes in handy several times a day - whip it out, use it, drop it back in the sheath. plus it's much harder for people to spot than the tell tale pocket clip, yet can be presented faster.

You are going to get this suggestion a lot.

Especially from me

The mini-grip, IMO, gives you all that you need at a ridiculousy low price.

just as a suggestion: you can carry your knife in your waste band and have your belt and shirt cover the clip. I started doing this after I saw how some guys were carrying their guns and it works pretty well for me.

Did a little more research. Is the benchmark 710 too big for edc? I love that knife. I have larger hands so does anyone think the benchmark 940 may be too small? Also thoughts on the flash II?

hahah the 940 is plenty big dude. the 710 is bigger than it feels. both are way more than you indicated you wanted to spend. that said I love the 710 and heartily recomend it to anyone who can handle its size.

go for a knife on the smaller side. its a pain to carry around a heavy, large folder if you like to wear dress pants or the like.
