Brand Noobian / First edc Suggestions?

Did a little more research. Is the benchmark 710 too big for edc? I love that knife. I have larger hands so does anyone think the benchmark 940 may be too small? Also thoughts on the flash II?

The 710 is a very popular EDC. If you are drawn to it, there's no reason not to get it. However, you'd be incredibly lucky to find one even close to your stated budget of $60.

If you have huge hands I could see the 940 feeling skinny or unsubstantial in your grip, relative to the 710 at least. The slim frame carries great for a knife of that length, though, much like a Spyderco Endura.

I wanted to like the Flash II but found it twitchy and cheap-feeling. Ironically, I strongly preferred the action and build of the Twitch (IMHO, the Flash is twitchy and the Twitch is flashy...:D )

I know the 710 is around $100. I'm totally over the $60. Do you guys think the 710 has a solid grip? The spyderco's look like beautiful knives but i'm not a fan of the thumb holes. More a stud kind of guy. And the axis lock on the benchmade looks incredible.

:D That's the spirit! You catch on quick.

I think so, but then again I've found that any handle material other than stainless steel is plenty grippy for me. Also, ultra-abrasive knives ruin my pockets and gear.

And the axis lock on the benchmade looks incredible.
It is. I like both my Spydercos and my Benchmades. As a lefty, I think the AXIS lock is a great design.

ffooter123, are there any Benchmade dealers near you (you might be surprised, sometimes your nearest Benchmade dealer may be a gun shop) where you could handle a 710? Like many of the classics we discuss, it looks great on the net but there is something special about it that requires handling to fully appreciate.

the 710 handle is pretty slick compared to say a spyderco military. the g10 isnt as grippy and the jimping isnt great. Its more than adequate for edc use but in that "emergency tactical" situations that you may or (hopefuly) may not ever be involved in you best hold on tight.

which is a good idea anyway, you dont want to torque the blade out of your hand .

you CANNOT go wrong with a 710. there is one in my pocket right now that i've had for about 8 years (1st production run). i didn't mention it because of your budget. if you buy one, you'll very likely never part with it and hold all knives to a higher standard. it is the quite possibly the ultimate (production) folder.

btw - the 710 is the SMALLEST knife i edc lol.

I'm definitely sold on the 710. Zignal zero, may I ask what other edc's you have? While I'm not into the thumb hole on the spyderco's the millie looks sick. P_mcmanis said in a tactical situation the 710 may be too slick and the millie is grippier. What do you guys think of those? I'm also looking for a cheaper blade to beat the hell out of. I was looking at the ontario Rat 1. I've heard good things. Any other suggestions from anyone?

there is no doubt the g10 on the military is better textured for grip than the one on the 710.

so is the jimping.

if you want grip the military wins. I own both, and I love both. TBH I think the military is a little bit better. Its also a little bit bigger (the handle is bigger, the blades are close). It is also a lot more liner locking lol.

I posted this in my 520 review page; but it should give you an idea of the relative size of these knives.

Handled a couple benchmarks today. Wheres the jimping? Didn't get to look at the 710 , but the "tactical " knives they had almost had no jimping. what's up with that? still like the feel of the blade. and the axis locks. my goodness, just awesome.

sorry, just now noticed this question.

my true EDC is a fixed blade. i ALWAYS have my Benchmade Nimravus on me. i, generally, carry one extra (smaller) knife too. it's usually my Bradley Kimura, but i tore that up a couple days ago, so i've been carrying my 710 as my extra knife. when i get my BM42 back from BM, that'll be my extra knife.

not sure what all i have lol, but i can tell ya. every since i got the 710, i NEVER carried anythingelse until i went fixed blade. oddly enough, the 710 was a replacement for another BM.

yea, it's a little slick, but it flares out at the hilt. so, i wouldn't worry about it too much, it's pretty secure.

i'm waiting on my BM Presidio fixed to be delivered, it will most likely be my new EDC. they just keep getting bigger LOL. i went:

(1)BM mini reflex
(2)BM 710
(3)BM Nimravus
(4)BM Presidio fixed

It's Benchmade. Benchmark no longer makes knives under that name, if at all.:D
