0.25um Is too fine for my taste as well.
1um Portland Knife House Diamond Spray is my favorite.
I've used everything from 10um to Ken Schwartz 3 nanometer (0.003um) PDP slurry.
Geeked out on it all.
1um Portland Knife House spray was the only one I felt was essential.
I seemed everything else was for fluff and
"sport sharpening"
I like the PKH spray because it gives my edge the higher sharpness I'm looking for without washing out the "bite" on the edge.
I found that Spray seems to provide a better interaction between the bevel, abrasive and leather giving it a little more aggression than a slurry yet doesn't make the leather rock hard like an emulsion which gives more options for light touch stroping and power stroping with more force so the leather conforms to hit the apex.
Paste is Cheap but the results left more to be desired and it gunked up the leather and didn't leave the edge I wanted.
I just use spray but only the good stuff.
So, I feel if someone wants to skip all the BS and keep things simple just get a high quality 1um Spray and some leather.
Nothing wrong with chasing "sport edges" with tons of compounds though either. That's part of the fun and the hobby of sharpening.
I believe
DeadboxHero
has expressed a strong preference for diamond spray. The only spray I have used is Hand American 0.25µm and I almost never use it now as I no longer use a straight and I don't find the need for it on knives. My universal-soluble pastes are coarser so I cannot make a direct comparison but I haven't formed a functional preference either way. I don't like the idea of micron-scale particles becoming airborne and I suspect paste is superior at suppressing that.
