Brands off Ferro Rods ?

I've noticed a few different and slightly cheaper brands of ferro rod in some of my local stores recently, one was quite a bit larger than the standard red handled Light my fire model.
Anyway I just wondered if any of you had tried any different brands out and what success you'd had with them ?

from now on I'm only buying the mischmetal rods from going gear. They don't just spark, they splatter white molten metal all over your tender. I've never had an easier time starting a fire with just a steel than with these.

All over your tender what ?

I have a Light My Fire Army and also ordered a 3 pack from Sportsman's guide. The cheapo three pack work ok for the fire pit but seem to gouge easily. I file them flat every once in awhile. I carry the LMF in my kit when I go afield.

Since I discovered the Going Gear firesteels, they're all I'll use now. If someone finds something better, I'd sure like to know about it. I'm not going to hold my breath, though, because I think it will be quite awhile till something better comes along.

I second that for Going Gear! They are great mischmetal rods and the shipping is SUPER fast. A great guy also!

I have a LMF that works fine

A friend of mine gave me a no name mischmetal rod he got over the net. Initially it worked well, then I encountered the same problem Brian (Mistwalker) did with inner sections not sparling at all :thumbdn:

I have a mischmetal rod from Derrick at knivesshipfree and this thing throws long burning globs of white hot metal :thumbup:

Later this year, I'm also going to get one from GG

Kind regards
Mick

I've always used LMF but I guess I may need to try the going gear rods after hearing people rave about them all the time.

I prefer the GG rods. The throw globs of molten metal like no other. However, I tend to keep those for when lighting natural tinders. Cottonball I will use one I got at Smoky Mountain Knife Works when I was there. Before that, it was all GG. The one I got there works perfect for the cottonballs though.

with all the talk about Going Gear's rods...has anybody compared all the mischmetal rods to see if they are all the same thing? Different sites offer them, but they are all the same sizes and prices. It would be nice to see a comparison to find out if they are indeed the same.
(Going Gear, Knives Ship Free, and Firesteel all carry what appear to be the same rods)

There have been some comparisons in this forum. The Going Gear rods definitely have a different composition than regular ferro rods, with different results (which many prefer).

So who actually manufactures the rods?

I mean, there can't be that many companies making them, and while it would seem GG sells the best, I sincerely doubt that they are the sole recipient of that particular formulation/alloy, so....

There HAS to be some amount of crossover.

There may be, but Storl (Going Gear), a forum member, sells great rods at very good prices, with fast shipping and really good customer service.

I'll stick with Going Gear.

This exchange made me spit coffee on my keyboard. Thanks. To answer the OP:
I'm GOING to 4th goinggear.com fire-steels, they throw globs and I love that.

I completely believe the folks here who have bought and used them.

I am merely stating the obvious fact that Going Gear, or any other seller doesn't actually MAKE them, so there has to be others with the same formula and many of the ones that do not work as well probably are the same formula with respect to each other.

There are probably only 3 to 4 manufacturers of mischmetal type rods total. Hence, ALL of the rods are probably one of those 3 or 4 types.
