Brass Corrosion

I have several sheath knives that through time, the brass on the guards has turned green from the acid in the leather. It's kind of a wax coating and green in color. Any cleaning tips?

0000 steel wool, then Simichrome.

I think that brass is not a good material for guards or handles.
It stains so easy and smells very bad!
