anyone know a good place to order or buy some brass? i just need a little bit for this knife im working on. or if someone wants to trade a piece of 1080 for a piece of brass let me know. my 1080 is 1/8"x1.5".

do they have just plain brass stock that i can buy to make my own guard cause if they do i didnt see it.

edit: nevermind i found it. went thru the catalog i have here and found it.

I make all my guards out of the brass stock I get from Texas knife maker supply.

They have many different sizes...I get the 3/4" by 1/2" ...I mostly get a foot of the stuff at a time...comes to the house in just a few days...
I have heard that some guys get the same stuff cheaper at other websites, but I have an account at TKS and so it is easy to order on-line there for me.

i too have an account with them. its where i bought my micarta. one of these days im going to take a few hundred dollars and go visit their store and just buy a whole lot of stuff. maybe take more than a few hundred. HEHEHEHE!!!!

Allan, would it be possible for me to trade you some 1080 for a piece of brass about 1.5" long?

McMaster-Carr has everything. Every size brass, and lots of different alloys.

Their shipping is great also. I ordered some screws from them last Thursday evening and had it by Friday afternoon.

(I will note that there is a McMaster Carr within 40 miles of my house.)

You might have a Grainger store nearby; like McMaster/Carr,they have lots of metal stock suitable for guards, pommels etc (brass, various grades of stainless, mild steel and so forth) at what appear to be competitive prices.

As a side note, both those also sell high-carbon and tool steels, but their prices for that stuff were crazy-high the last time I checked, compared to TKS, Admiral and other common knifemaker-suppliers, I have no idea why?!?

Check the sticky at the top of the makers forum for suppliers of flat stock, I probably forgot some good ones.

i order jobber bits from McMaster/Carr before i made my first blade. i was just suprised to see a big box for 5 small bits that im using for making my pin holes. HEHEHE!!!

Check out your local scrap metal dealer and junk yards. They have loads of possibilities. I once picked up a large piece of brass several feet long and a foot wide about quarter of an inch thick for little money. It may have been a floor expansion joiner from an old building.

Good point, I don't think you have to be as picky about brass as you would be about steel.

Personally, I much prefer the look of N/S over brass, but geeez it's a bear to drill :( And not as easy to find for cheap....
