After a lot of reading regarding lightweight camping stoves, I finally ordered a Brasslite this a.m. They are on sale with free shipping till tomorrow, so I bit. Anyone else like/use these little stoves? They seem pretty solid and maintenance free.

I've got a turbo, great little stove been using it about 4 years now. I highly recommend a pot vs. a cup as the broader botttom heats better, quicker boil for the fuel used. I use a wal-mart grease pot with this stove, add a cozy and you have a perfect ultralight cook kit.

I use a Brasslite. They are simple, adjustable and hot. I tried a Trangia (okay, but heavy), a Varga Triad (light but sucked big time), several of the pop can stoves (lght, cheap and kinda finicky) and then got a Brasslite Turbo. I whipped up an alumnum flashing windscreen for it to fit the Brasslite titanium pot I got with it and it is several minutes faster to boil.

If not the Brasslite, then I use a Coleman F1 butane stove, or an Esbit folder.

I need to do a little demo thread on making an Esbit stove out of some flashing, a couple aluminum gutter spikes and a cat food can. Hot 'n' cheap, jes' like mah wimmin :D

I made a SuperCat.

Here's the cookpot with SC inside.

The SC filled with 1 oz. of denatured alcohol.

The SC being primed. I found it best to let the alcohol just come to a boil. This produces vapors which force the burning fuel out the side jets. (See two subsequent pics as well.) Otherwise, the stove just never really gets cookin'. Priming time was about a minute.

Boil at 5 minutes.

Still cooking at 8 minutes.

Total burn time was 9 minutes on 1 oz. of alcohol (not including the 1 minute of priming). The stove will hold 1.5 oz.

Tested a Brasslite today too.

With 2 oz. of denatured alcohol, burn time was about 18 minutes. I think it will hold a little more fuel and burn a little longer.

I ran it on simmer (air ports closed) for about a minute, and this setting did noticeably reduce the flame.

Denatured alcohol. Burns clean. You can pick it up cheaply in the Wal-Mart paint section.

The SuperCat was easy to make. Took about 30 minutes. Cut one 3 oz. can for the bottom socket and smoothed the edge with a Dremel wire brush. Riveted the socket to the 5 oz. can. Marked and drilled the other 3 oz. can. That was it.

Total cost. Less than a dollar, plus my cats got some fancy food. :D

im sorry for my ignorance but thats part of the reason i hang here is to try to learn denatured achol is what ??? cleaner, facil care, wood stripper. were do i look in wally world. the clerck around here are no help. thats guyon

I think it's used as a shellac thinner. My can also mentions that it is a stove fuel.
