Break In

Does Cali require a 10 day wait on shotguns also? If not, I'd get her a 20ga. pump immediately. A Mossberg would also be cheaper than most handguns and is a fairly light shotgun that's easy to master. Other than that, motion lights, pepper spray (I hope Cali hasn't outlawed that yet) and the dogs. Glad she's ok.

10 day wait? Sigh…..

First, if your aunt has no handgun experience, I would recommend she get some training on defensive use of said handgun. Also make sure she is aware of the self defense laws of the great state of CA.

People often recommend small revolvers for novices because “all you have to do is pull the trigger”. Well that is true but small, lightweight guns with a short sight radius can be hard to shoot accurately and recoil tends to be heavy. Double-action trigger pulls (especially on many Taurus guns) can be quite heavy. Defensive revolvers should never be cocked into single action mode in my opinion (and many other) due to the very light trigger pull which can be pulled unintentionally under stress. My recommendation would be a mid-size semi-auto in 9mm and proper training on how to operate it.

If she has any experience with or is more comfortable with long guns, a youth model 20 ga. pump is a great choice for women as mentioned above.

Other than that, keeping the place well-lit and uninviting as possible is the way to go.

sadly it is a 10 day wait for any firearm. and i think a 20 gauge or even a good 410 would suffice, mossberg makes the 500 in a 410 and it looks like a decent gun.

and if you want to get her a pistol you have to have your HSC in order (handgun safety certificate) which you can get at gun stores.

KnifeAbility: Yah it is, she isn't infirmed or feeble, just not very strong and shes small. As for the Izzie, she took mine, made her feel better was the excuse ;P but shes been cutting away with it non-stop lol. I'm ganna place an order for a pink one for myself, she laughed and called me girly boy. Hey if its a esee than I don't care if its blue red pink orange yellow etc. Well orange blade would be really awesome, oddly imo. I'd buy it and black cord it! As for working it out, officer neighbors camera, caught footage of 3 guys, one whos sweater he wore, is commonly known in the neighborhood. They picked him up this morning btw, so I am happy about that. I am unsure if they have his buddies, but hes a local kid 19, steals and vandalizes the neighborhood. He steals to feed his many "habits", and when he was caught I was told by the officer he was very violent. And had a glock, s&w knife, and other items on him. I'm just happy he was caught, I hope they get or have gotten his friends.

Hoop: Yes there is a wait lol.

Adam: Thanks for the advice! Shes going to be going with a few options, and will be spending time with other family members at the range :) Shes browsed a few magazines like Jeff's swat, and has already as of last night purchased a few instructional dvds for now, just to watch. Place is pretty uninviting since they are still doing work, they started around 7am this morning, and shes getting better fences, and lots of thorn bushes planted around them, thank god I don't have to do those this time, the ones she purchased yesterday for planting today is being done for her. :) Shes also having solar panels installed noonish? And she left like 20 mins ago to go to a store in orange that sells fire arms, camping equipment, and etc. Shes also going to stop by connel chevrolet in Costa Mesa, she realizes she really should get a truck lol. Shes looking and eyeing the v8 Colorado. What a life changing last few days for her I guess. She also ordered a bowflex oddly, she said she wants to get stronger too. Thats good :)

Gundude/Yoda: Yah thats what I told her, a wait is a wait, she went to a place in orange, orange circle? I think? To take the handgun safety test, she may come back with a reciept lol. If she ends up buying a hg and sg from them.

Again, thanks for all the concern, and input guys! Means alot. Still sleeping over here, and watching the guys do their work, just curious how everythings done, like they are poring cement into the ground with rebar, some stuff I just find interesting lol. Kind of crappy how such a nice city, and area, has been now getting an influx of deviants and criminals. :\ makes me feel a bit odd/off ended, my parents bought their first house in this area back in 80 something, so its weird, to see it slipping into what I see it becoming. :(

I know this is a little late but I would suggest a shotgun any power and teach her how to shoot from the hip. She would be able to handle a larger caliber from the hip then the shoulder. I love my 12 gauge but only shoot it from the hip (and yes I am good enough with it I regularly scare the guys that don't know me at the range). Shotguns are easy to aim and they don't go through walls.
Just the sound of the load going into the chamber should be enough to send most problems back out the door.

wow, i'm glad they caught that guy and i hope they catch the others. it's great to hear that your aunt is taking her own security into her own hands. i mean, between the housework, the firearm, izula and the bowflex, i'd be proud. hell, be her workout partner, you know? it's good that she has someone like you too to kinda guide her through the measures she's taking.

maybe consider a ruger sp101 .327 magnum, less recoil, no worry about jams, and you could keep a revolver fully loaded with no worry about spring wear. Also if you consider having a dog or dogs I would stay away from a shotty. I have a 12g 870 HD but since I own dogs as well, I might move to a .40 or .45 sig with some HD rounds. a dead bolt on the bedroom door is also a good idea.

My aunts great guys :) and the guy gave up his buddies, his motivation was everyone in the neighborhood looked like they lived with other people, she looked like an easy victim, said they knew of her from living in the neighborhood and after watching her for a few weeks, and a few days before hand more closely to know her habits. Creepy huh?

Anyways more family is there now :) other aunt and cousin are moving in, so over all everything worked out, and now they have my dogs there. Little Dogs to me seem a little zippy, but seem to be more jumpy and alert than my big dogs, big dogs seem to go investigate what the little brats are barking about, and if its a threat threat bark loudly too.

The lights are birdcaged? And impact resistant glassed? After what happened her neighbors have all been having work done on their houses too :) hahaha, looks like a string of houses converted to prisons with their lights and fencing.

Tomorrow night organizing a neighborhood watch and system for the neighborhood, the officer across from my aunt will be heading it up to help inform people in the area and how to keep their homes better secured. Also neighborhood wide emergency preparedness for natural disasters etc :) this is shaping up nicely. We are ganna try to weekly have a neighborhood meeting and outdoor cookout, chili, burgers, fries, chicken, etc. This is awesome.

Maybe a blessing in disguise.
Anyways guys I am going to head to class! Have a good one!
