The human mind is capable of such terrible things, our sanity is what protects the world from this terror. Once that sanity is gone...bad things are bound to happen. I think that the cost of the freedoms that we enjoy is taking the chance that we may encounter an individual like the one that killed the people in the store. He could have done as much damage with a baseball bat and I don't think that anyone would like to see baseball bats made illegal. Taken in perspective, these crimes are relatively rare. Considering the number of guns, knives, swords, bayonets, and even the most deadly of weapons, the dreaded kitchen knife, etc... in our society, I think that it is a credit to our population that these incidences don't occur more frequently. Yeah these things make the headlines and cause us all to shudder, but in reality the chance of a violent encounter with a sword weilding unstable person is very slight. Is allowing more responsible citizens to arm themselves the answer? I don't know. I always carry a good sized very sharp folder and spend a lot of time and money training in the martial arts. Being cognoscent of your environment and being prepared seems prudent to me. I don't carry the knife for SD but I try to be very sensitive to the situations around me. I train for the worst but hope I never am faced with the need to "put someone away". Knives aren't the problem and I think that most of the people in our country recognize that. Your brain is the best weapon. Oh well, just my $0.02.

Actually Towcutter, very few un-sane people resort to any degree of violence. It's at least as random and infrequent as sane people committing violence.

By the way, I saw 28 Days Later this afternoon. Now there is some seriously deranged violence in that flick. Check it out.

After reading about the possibilty of self defense from a psyco with a sword, I'm thinking I should look into carrying a more substantial knife...going to be checking out a Strider from the "Strider Passaround", with proper training would this be a possibility?

Maybe if someone had a handgun there they could of stoped him (hey, that could happen here... no permits issued here) but as I get out of my pro-gun views. They tried to ban machates up here for a few weeks, didn't go through. Anyway, this bitch on the news cast, she should really get her info straight. If they didn't know what was used then you don't just make that up. For example she should of used a "edged weapon" (I'm not asking for mircales here, but not an outright lie of what was being used). If anyone has a tape of that particular news segment, we should all make a class action suit against her and the news station for distribution of false information. The only decent Samurai sword that would be substaintal todo that would probably be a Cold Steel which is $400, "united cutlery" wouldn't probably fall apart. phucking liberal newscasters

Exxxxactly. Florida goes on that list.

For what it's worth, this may not be good news for knife knuts, but for gun gnuts it can only serve to underscore what a well-placed civilian armed with a legally-carried handgun can do to save the day.

After all, it was a cop with a *gun* who stopped this psycho sh*twad. Why should people have to wait for a *cop* to show for lives to be saved? Why not enable *any* law-abiding citizen to avail himself of the means to save lives?

think about it this way in the BETTER states where people can carry handguns in public, this psychotic clown would massacred a lot more then two people with the handgun that HE would be carrying instead of the sword/machete.

Erm, first of all, isn't it the TV news agencies which tend to present somewhat liberal views of news items? How does the reporter's mis-reporting of the facts make her a ******* liberal newscaster? Or are these two separate complaints?
