I'm looking for a little advice from Breeden users.

I really like the look of Bryan's knives--especially in Osage Orange--and am looking to pick one up. I'm mostly a general purpose user: hiking, camping, fishing, hunting. Typically I like smaller blades, but I'm looking at his Pathfinder or Peace Maker in the 4" to 5" range.

Given my general purpose requirements, is there one you would recommend over the other? Both look like great knives.

Input appreciated. Input with pics really appreciated. :D

I own both the pathfinder and peace maker. They are both really functional knives. I would rate their functionality pretty close to one another. They just have somewhat different styles and aesthetics. When I ordered my pathfinder, I specifically asked Bryan to accentuate the wave. This has some advantages when using the knife for kitchen-like tasks. The handle is a little more slick towards the blade end and doesn't provide as effective a guard if you were concerned about that.

The peacmaker handle is much more hand-filling and is as comfy as can be. The blade profile is a classic hunter or leuko type with straight spine. I like the more centered point of the pathfinder slightly better. The blade width on the peacemaker is nicer though.

Kind of like speaking to Cptl Punishments thread. They are both really functional and useful knives. I like qualities in both of them. So I'm probably not helping you all that much. Here are some pictures to confuse you some more!

Wow! I love looking at Bryan's knives. He actually just sent me a picture of the knife he is making for me. I'll have it next week. Here is the picture of the work in progress:

It's more similar to his Blackwood Bushcrafter, but with a longer blade.

bryan has some really cool designs going these days... there are quite a few to choose from...

my favorite, lately, is the Tyson bushcraft knife...(sheath made by me)

Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Peacemaker. It looks great in osage, and is a very functional and good-handling knife. You may also want to look at the CUB, though. That might be a bit better in your length range. I like the Pathfinder a lot, but the handle just does not fill my hand the way I like it.

Here's mine. Well used, it now has a mustard patina. I have a kydex sheath from Jeff H ( I recommend him). I use my knife on my landscaping projects, it does whatever I need it too!

Hi all,

C Bryant thanks for posting the links that Reuben has done.
I just chatted with Rotte on the phone.
So thanks for all the kind comments you guys have said the pics look great LOL
Thanks again,
Bryan

I really enjoy using my 4" Pathfinder. It seems like just the right amount of knife for so many different uses. The fit and size of the handle are perfect too.

jds1 , Just last week end my MOM who is house sitting and doggy sitting said to me when I went to see her. " Ohhh I for got my knife at home " She was refering to her 4" Pathfinder that she keeps in her kitchen as a full time paring and do it all knife. "There is something about the depression between the handle and the blade that makes the pathfinder so easy to use in the kitchen when I hold and use it." My sister told me once. LOL I don't know. I am going to stick with my TH Bushcrafter for kitchen and camp chores though. Mom and Sis can use what they like. LOL

I agree Bryan, the transition of handle to blade on the Pathfinder makes a very ergo fit for many different cutting positions. Your Mom obviously has great taste in knives. :D

Thanks everyone for the pics and input. Of course I am more uncertain than ever, these designs all look so useful.

I spoke with Bryan and now am leaning toward...his TH Bushcrafter, maybe with a longer blade. Waiting to hear his input on that idea. I like the TH handle he has developed.

Thanks again. I'll let y'all know where this goes and post a review.

Mtn Mike -- Nice sheath; I have to try that at some point.

By all accounts Mr. Breeden makes a fine knife. I really like the designs.

Does anyone have info on the edge-holding ability of the knives? Who does the heat treatment?

Thanks.

From speaking with him, I believe he heat treats his blades himself, then tempers and does a soft back draw, ala W. Goddard. This provides a differentially treated blade.

Is it wrong to find that so fascinating?

Thanks for the response.... and, no... it is not wrong to find that fascinating! KNIFE KNURDS UNITE!:D

Whelp, have been in contact with Bryan and have asked him to make a knife for me. It will have the Peace Makers blade in 1/8" and 1 1/4" wide X 5" long to handle. Here's a photo of Bryans artwork of the handle I wanted. Handles will be Osage. I'm stoked!! Thanks Bryan for all the great communication and advice.

+1 for the CUB. my fvorite fixed blade. I posted a review where I really abused the blade and it gained a nice edge again with a handful of strokes on a fine grit rod. IMO, the best knife for the money!!!
