Breeden Knives-Tyson Bushcraft Knife
A few months ago I had the honor of testing and writing a series of reviews on, then new custom knifemaker, Bryan Breeden. It sure is nice to see a person do what they love, with as much enthusiasm as the first day we conversed on the phone. One thing is for sure, Bryan and I have the same feelings towards what goes into a good outdoors knife. It’s no wonder why I am so drawn to anything he comes up with.
Quite possibly the best kept secret of the Breeden Knives line, is the Tyson Bushcrafter. I have only seen prototype pictures before. Until now, a lot of us have become familiar with the Pathfinder, Kat, PSKK (Personal Survival Kit Knife), Kelly, and as of late, the Peacemaker. Breeden knives have also become recognized as, the orange handled knives. The Tyson knife is a good way to showcase a different side of Breeden knives with brown micarta scales and a 3 5/8-inch drop point blade. Overall length on this test piece is 7 7/8-inches long. The handle measures 4 1/8-inches and features a slight palm swell to the nicely contoured scales. Thickness is 1/8-inch and the width of the blade is about 15/16”.
Whittling with the Tyson
My favorite thing to do with a knife is make fuzz sticks. Not only is it a fun thing to do while taking a break on the trail, but a very important survival skill. This task is as much about the handle as it is the blade. I found the 4 3/16-inch handle to be more than adequate for a full grip.
Sheath
A simple fold over sheath is a long time proven design. Good quality leather that compliments the nice brown micarta scales. The knife sticks out about 1 ¾-inch from the sheath. This gives enough handle to grab onto and pull out with one motion. When wearing the sheath on a belt the knife doesn’t poke the ribs too bad while sitting and taking breaks. I think if you are a little more, round, it may jab you a bit.
Blade
A drop point blade is one of my favorite types. The drop-point design lowers the point for control, but leaves the point extremely strong. Usually coupled with plenty of belly for slicing, this format is often used for hunting knives. This is also an extremely good all-around design. Like the clip-point, the drop-point is seen in a wide range of knives from hunters to military knives to utility knives and beyond.
Handle
The handle in my opinion is a very personal thing. As stated earlier, making fuzz sticks and whittling is a great outdoors pastime and a skill. However, an uncomfortable handle could turn making fuzz sticks into a dreaded chore. Trust me, you will remember the knives that aren’t comfortable and they will know the feeling of neglect.
I am not a big fan of palm swells. While they look appealing, I question their true function. It may fill your hand up in a forehand or fist type grip, but there are no “One Size Fits All.” The palm swell on the Tyson is very mild. I didn’t feel a huge advantage but on the other hand it wasn’t uncomfortable. When batoning wood I tend to grip the knife in a different way than traditional cutting. I grip more towards the middle of the handle for a looser comfortable wrist position. This is a little hard to put into words but I am sure some of you know what I mean regarding the posture. This feels like I am gripping a ball while trying to control the knife being pounded by a baton. An important grip for bushcraft is the chest lever grip. The edge points towards the knuckle of the hand and the thumb on the flat of the blade for support. This is used for very powerful yet controlled cuts. Again a palm swell interrupts this grip, feeling like there is something extra in my hand. With so many different size hands out there, a palm swell is best when shaped to the users hand since the roundness won’t be in the same place for everyone.

Final Word
This is a tool. Like any screwdriver, hammer, machete, or saw we own, we will always look for function and comfort. Hopefully this passaround will give people a chance to handle the kind of knife they wouldn’t normally be interested in, or put to rest some prejudices towards simple user knives. As for me, simple is the only way to do things, unless you through the word cheap in there!
