Hi all,

Well on a thread called (stranded) M from here on the forums asked if I would start another thread about what I carry and why I carry it.

Ok here is the pic I posted on that Stranded thread

101_1961.jpg

As to the contents I carry all my stuff there in a military butt pack with a canteen pouch that sewed onto the side of the butt pack that I got from black hawk ind. a few years a back. In that canteen pouch I carry the 2 small ti cups and one bigger pot and then the lid that comes with it and then a steel nalgene water bottle. it all nests together and fits right into that canteen pouch on the side of the butt pack. I use them for having water when I start out on my walk and then to be able to purify water and cook in when I want to.

The other contents of my bag are as follows.
On the left side of the little cup there is my small binos. I love to watch nature and bring it up closer to me.

On the far right and next to my canteen there is my U-dig -it folding hand shovel. I like to dig fire pits and sometimes bait for my fishing and if makes a heck of a coal carrier when I want to move some hot coals in my fire if I need to. It also is a great root and tuber digger upper LOL.

On the left again is a pouch that is yellow it holds the survival kit.

101_1966.jpg

the normal stuff. fishing kit, signal mirror, spoon, smaller psk knife, space blanket, little flash light, knife sharpener and ceramic steel, katadin pills for treating water. I have a couple of containers of cotton and pj mix and a couple of flint rods. If you look in the pic with just under there wrist compass on the right I have a Boy scout hot spark with a orange landyard on it. I have started over 350 fires with that one and it is still going strong LOL.

Moving on, below the canteen I have amy military poucho.

Then under that I have my 550 cord.

Then my compass and pouch.

Over to the left again I have a small plastic bag of sunflower seed and right next to that I have a some propell water flavoring drink mixes and a packet of coco and apple cider drink mix. then under that stuff I have a granloa bar.

Then under that I have a folding hand saw.
To the left of that I have several bandanas. there are to many uses for them to mention.

now to the right of the hand saw is my Warthorn belt knife that I make and a companion knife that I made, to carry for a little back up knife to the bigger knife and then my sheath that holds both knives and a firesteel with the orange handle and then a sharpening rod also.

Under my Warthron I have a hatchet that I made .
Then under that I have my leather gloves. and to the left of that I have the sheath for my hatchet.

Then to the left of that I have my cut down Fly swater. It never failed that I would sit down on my hike and have a drink and or just watch nature with my binos and then one or two flys will come by and bother me. Not any more
though LOL.

I carry my butt pack with a shoulder sling and it just works for me. I started doing that a couple of months back after I watched a youtube video with Ray Mears on it and he was walking with a military butt pack and a canteen pouch attacted to his butt pack with a sling on it and I thought I would do that to and so I did and have been doing that for a couple of months now.

So If anyone else want to post pics or talk about what they carry or are carrying now since you might have had a change in the way you carry your kit, go for it. I might just see something I would like to try also.

Anyways M I hope this answers your ?s if not just let me know.

I love the "survival fly swatter" :D:thumbup: Thanks for sharing Bryan...these kits are continual evolutionary process so it's always good to post updates based on lessons learned. I need to lay out mine before it gets packed away while I'm deployed...

Hmmmm cool thread, and nice kit Bryan, I like those knives in your kit....I need to order one of those final option knives later when I can.

I was just going through my kit the other day while I was out and realized I had learned a few things and added a few things....I'll try to post some pics later or tomorrow.

Cool kit! I like the addition of the fly swatter. Never thought of putting one of those in there, seems like that could come in handy!

If the deer flies are as mean there in Nebraska as they are in western Illinois it's not really just a luxury to have it along.

That's a lot of stuff! How much do you think your pack weighs? Looks like a good setup with lots of redundancy, but I can't help but think it must be crazy heavy. (Not that I am one to talk about overpacking)

Thanks for sharing your kit Bryan . I've been messing with what I carry and how I carry it too, and I think I may be finally coming down to a good set-up (for me).

I started out with carrying it all in my backpack, then a survival buttpack (maxped proteus), then went to a batman belt...with maxped pouches galore, then went to a carrying my psk all in a guyot on my belt. After various lessons learned (weight, volume/bulkiness, ease to get to, can I carry it with backpack that has a proper waistbelt, can I get to the contents with an injured hand, etc.), I now carry my psk stuff distributed in my pockets. I also carry a a few redundant items in a pouch in my pack (shelter, water, fire) that would get used before the stuff in my pockets.

If I have time when I get home today, I'll try to post pics of my stuff.

Hi all,

Rocks 6 you are so very right these kits do evolve and there is alwasys something you can add or take a way.

I for got to mention that that kit with out the belt knife and hatchet weigths in it around 10 pounds. I will carry my camera and every once in while I will carry a field guide to. not always but sometimes. so my kit might go up to 12 or 14 pounds then.

also I for got to mention in in the main pic I have a little medical kit that is infront of the yellow bag. Well I used to keep a really well to do first aid kit but know I have severall 3x3 and 2x2 pads and then some med tape, a savle container by burts bees and then some chapsticks and 5 1" wide by 3" long bandaids and that is it. I know it will not cover every type of medical thing but if I get a cut I cover the cut and then go home LOL.

Thanks for the comments on the Fly swater. I all most did not put that in the pic.

LOL One day I decided I had had enough from just sitting and trying to have a drink of water and fly just would not leave me alone and so i thought if I had a smaller fly water I would have killed it. it is not like I was be bombarded byt 100 of them but just that occasional fly. Well in the past I have taken that fly swater out of the pics I posted of my other shoulder carry packs that I had LOL but I really do not care if I get laughed at LOL I am sure some of you are LOL.

Thanks again for the knife design that you drew up Mistwalker, I just love my Warthorn knife.

Again all if you have pics you want to post and all go ahead.

Hi all,

I ment to say tha if you remeber reading that thread by pict he talks about carrying what you need right NOW, because of the TIME factors that may be involved. Shelter and water and tools to get the other things done now if need be.

That is part of the reason why I carry what I carry.

Yeah...seeing your fly-swatter actually reminded me about collecting insects and I ended up getting a head net for my backpacking kit. I haven't tried it yet, but it should work well to collect grasshoppers...

You med-kits sounds identical to what I have in mine. Mostly gauze pads, tape, antibiotic (although one kit does have Burt's Bee salve which is excellent) and I much prefer the larger band aids and a couple knuckle band aids.

Thanks again Bryan. I've got a small deployment survival kit I'm putting together and will post pics here.

That's the idea behind what I carry. In my pack I carry one of those heavy duty space blankets and an AMK emergency bivy, paracord, a guyot and MP1 tabs, and several different methods to start a fire. When I have more money available, I plan to pick up one of those silnylon shelter ponchos.

After tying one out as an improvised shelter in my back yard for 40 days to see how it did I became really impressed with the AMK products. The Heat Sheets are awesome and I bought my wife of the their personal survival kits that Doug Ritter designed. It seems really well thought out.

I remember that thread, it was a good one Mistwalker. I think your test was one of the reasons I decided to put heatsheets in all of my kits.

Thanks, it was for me too. I think for a few other people also.

Awsome kit Bryan. Thanks a ton for posting it. I am going to have to get some orange cord and duct tape to make some of my kit more visable. I love the multiple nesting cups and metal Nalgene bottle also. Where did you get those?

Hi all,

Hey guys you are welcome for the pics I posted.

Yea I think you might be right Rocks 6 LOL yea i use to really have more in my med kit but now I am just doing thing different.
I look forward to seeing you little deplyment kit Please do post the pics :D

You to mistwalker post away.
Yes we have some nasty deer flies to, but heck just even a little house type fly and can be a nuicsence LOL

When I was in the Marines I carried a little green pouch on my belt next to my SOG Knife that I carried as my if I have to drop all me gear and run. I would at least have my survival knife( the sog knife) and that little pouch ( it was a shotgun shell pouch) with some survival goodies to help with what ever I might get myself into. I now carry a little black pouch that is has my survival goodies in it and then my Warthorn knife right next to it. I have to click out and then click back in to post the pic.
This pic shows my shoulder kit and the little black pouch and then my Warthorn knife.

Yep I remember that thread to with the heat sheet that mist walker did.
Those AMK space blankets are pretty neat and way better than nothing if you had to even just sit under it and let the rain or snow fall LOL

yep when Pict posted that thread and I seen what he carried, I was thinking that is pretty close to what I carry and for the same reasons

TIME and NOW. LOL

building a shelter is fun and neat and may be a life saving practice, but when I need it now buidling one is most likly 2 to 4 hours ways. and it still might need more time on it depending on where you are and how good you are at making it, Oh and lets hope you are not hurt in any way. Hurt eyes, hands and legs just plain stink when trying to build a shelter. That seems how a lot of survival situations start to begin with. INJURYIES.

If you can make your kit a little less wieght or go with a little less than GREAT LOL Just make sure that if you decide to go for a walk and trip and fall and need to keep some rain off or body heat in or start a fire and purifiy some water that you can do that with out having to travel all over gods creation before you find it. You know the old saying better to have it with and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I know that some of you do not need to carry this much( some may consider 10 pounds to much ) if you are on a nice traveled trail and could fall down in 10 minutes some one will be comming down the trail and will help you.

I live in a rural area and my nearest neigbor lives a mile away. so going for a walk for me and having a accident could be tragic. so I carry a few more supplies just for that event that might never happen, BUT if it does:eek:
I think I will make it:D Well at least hope so LOL.
